" THE MIDLAND SCHOOL 94 Readington Road North Branch, NJ 08876 midlandschool.org 908-722-7210 The Midland School , in North Branch, NJ, is a New Jersey Depart- ment of Education approved private special education school dedicated to the individual, academic, social, emotional and career education needs of students, ages 3 through 21, with intellectual and develop- mental disabilities. Midland serves children with multiple disabilities from over 60 school districts throughout Northern and Central New Jersey. As leaders in the field for 60 years, Midland promotes person- al achievement and fosters inde- pendence by providing a range of innovative programs and services including: individualized instruction; multi-sensory approach/ABA class- room; Midland Tots Preschool; life skills training; extracurricular/after school/respite program; speech, occupational and physical therapies; certified BCBA, social worker and psychologist; bilingual/culturally diverse staff; and a comprehensive school to work transition program. Midland teachers are able to individualize education due to small class sizes. Each classroom is staffed with a teacher and paraprofessional who are specially trained to work with students with intellectual and physi- cal disabilities. The Midland Tots Preschool pro- gram is enrolling 3 and 4 year old students for immediate admission. The preschool program provides aca- demic instruction, all therapies, toi- let-training, and rest times. The small class size makes this an ideal pro- gram for students with special needs. As students progress through the program, they spend time in art, music, wood shop, computer lab, the library, and our community and inde- pendent living areas. Social skills are also a part of our curriculum and positive behavior management is reinforced in each class. When the students turn 15 and move to our upper wing, they begin an afternoon program of career clus- ters. This program allows students to sample various career possibilities and work to determine which areas are preferred and where their skills are best utilized. Students are exposed to ten different career clusters during their high school years and then they are better able to be helpful when they begin their job training at age 18. When they turn 18, students are eligible to go to our work room and learn skills, after which they are able to go out to work with a job coach one day per week. Our Super Senior program is for students’ ages 19 and 20. These stu- dents attend classes three days each week and go to our work placements the other two days. They are prepar- ing for their final year at Midland , the Transition year, when they will work three days each week and spend the other two days working on practical independent living skills. The Midland School has an out- standing nursing team who are able to handle complicated medical situa- tions and treat students with a vari- ety of needs. As students grow and learn, they progress from the class- room to work environments, learning the skills that they need to have in order to be successful as future employees. Additionally, students of all ages work on social skills, com- munity and independent living skills, and foster their own independence to the greatest extent possible.
