Millions of dollars are being spent on medications and allergy shots for the treatment of seasonal allergies that affect a large part of the population in the United States. Seasonal allergies are regarded by Western medicine as an immediate hypersensitivity reaction occurring when antibodies produced by lym- phocytes interact with airborne parti- cles like pollen. Western medicine describes the locations of lympho- cytes in addition to being in the blood steam as also in Peyer’s patch- es in the gastrointestinal tract, spleen, lymph nodes, and bone mar- row. Acupuncture utilizes the meridi- ans of stomach, spleen, and large intestines which is an interesting overlap of Western and Chinese medical thought. Treating seasonal allergies with acupuncture is extremely gratifying to me as an acupuncturist. Often, there is a quick response. Sometimes, patients get some relief during the first visit while lying on the exam table with their acupuncture needles in place. How does it all work? Patients describe their nose stuffiness on a scale from zero to ten with zero describing no stuffiness and 10 indi- cating worst possible stuffy nose. After an initial series of treatments, patients come in as needed. Some come once or twice a year while oth- ers need to come more often to get relief. Patients can also determine if acupuncture worked on them by the reduced number of sneezes per day and by the lesser episodes of itching around their eyes. Noteworthy Points Generally, patients feel better if they avoid sugar and milk in their diets. There are many patients who have done better with acupuncture when medication and allergy shots have failed to treat them. Patients can also continue standard treatments while availing the great benefits of acupuncture. Acupuncture treatments help many to reduce or eliminate their depend- ence on allergy medications. How should you choose your Acupuncturist? There are many ways of performing acupuncture. TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), Japanese, Korean, French Energetics, Worsely 5 Elements, ear, hand etc. However, when choosing your acupuncturist, keep in mind that the specific style a practitioner uses is not as important as knowing about the success rate a practitioner achieves with whatever style he or she uses. Remarkable here is that TCM focuses on the theory that prevention before the onset of the diseases or interven- tion at an early stage is better than treating after the onset. Acupuncture preconditioning or stimulation with acupuncture before the onset of problems has been widely applied from ancient times to present day clinical practices. If you suffer from seasonal allergies, acupuncture is an excellent treat- ment option.
