Make a Recipe Connection with our NEW ONLINE RECIPE BOOK! FACIAL PARENTHESES LINES TREATMENT By: Dr. Patricia Barsanti Often we receive phone calls from new patients asking for help reduc- ing the lines that curve from their nose to their mouth (parentheses lines) and lines that run down from the corners of their mouth (mari- onette lines). These folds and lines can be a sign of aging, but can also make your face look tired, mad or unhappy :( Patients often ask for Botox® to treat these concerns, when they need dermal fillers. What’s the difference? Botox® relaxes the muscles causing lines and wrinkles in areas such as the eye and forehead. But dermal fillers such as Juvéderm®, the #1 selling collection of hyaluronic acid fillers in the US, add volume to the folds and lines helping reduce their appearance. Why do we need vol- ume for corrections? Unfortunately, as we age gracefully, our facial bones around the jaw, cheek, and eyes are changing. You can thank evolution & genetics for that. These structural changes will have an impact on your facial skin along with the loss of facial fat and collagen. That is why volume loss occurs. But we can add some youth back with dermal filler injections! Dermal fillers add structure and subtle volume to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. There are several FDA approved brands and filler types on the mar- ket. What you want to consider is the how thick the product is and how long it lasts. Some fillers are better for the parenthesis lines (nasolabial folds) and others are better for the marionette lines and sagging jowls around your mouth. One brand is not necessarily better than the other. They have all improved over the years for better results, while also including numb- ing medication for comfort during the treatment. The most commonly used dermal fillers contain hyaluronic acid, which is already a natural sub- stance in your skin for moisture, softness, and volume. Hyaluronic acid fillers can last 1-2 years depending on the patient, injection location, and type of product. Some other dermal fillers may con- tain materials such as collagen or silicone, which we do not recom- mend due to possible complica- tions of allergic reactions. Also unlike hyaluronic acid which is reversible, others may not. Plus if you are receiving a permanent filler correction today, it may not look good 10 years from now due to changes in facial structure and skin! Treatments take about 20-40 min- utes in the office. The cost ranges from $500-$950 per syringe. Depending on the treatment area & volume loss, patients may need an average of 1-3 syringes. Most of our patients experience only slight discomfort during treatment. Mild bruising, redness, and swelling are the most common side effects. Regular activity can be resumed the same day. If you are looking for a non-surgical option for treating your parenthe- ses or marionette lines, consult with your doctor to see if dermal fillers are right for you. 154 Mt Bethel Road, Warren, NJ 908-755-8400 www.BellaFinaMediSpa.com www.theconnectionsnj.com
