With this increase in competitive and leisure sporting activities, comes an increase in the likelihood of sustaining a con- cussion injury. A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by violent shaking or impact of the head or body, which affects your brain and bodily func- tion. Effects are usually temporary but in some cases can be long lasting or even perpetual. Symptoms can include headaches, vomiting, fatigue and problems with concentration, memory, balance and coordination. CONCUSSION STATISTICS According to the statistics collected by the UPMC Sports Medicine Con- cussion Program, concussions that occur in student athletes are com- mon and should always be assessed by a medical professional. • Between 1.7 and 3 million sports- and recreation-related concussions happen each year. Around 300,000 are football-related. • 5 of 10 concussions go unreported or undetected. • 2 in 10 high-school athletes who play contact sports – including soc- cer and lacrosse – will suffer a con- cussion this year. • Girls' soccer sees the second-most concussions of all high school sports. Girls’ basketball sees the third most. If you think that you or a loved one has suffered a concussion, a concus- sion specialist can be instrumental for recovery. Delay in instituting proper treatment may prolong recovery from a concussion, or even result in permanent neurological deficits. CONCUSSION CARE IN NEW PROVIDENCE At Body Pure Chiropractic we use a holistic approach to concussion care that is founded on three main pillars. • Functional Neurology - Through careful assessment, a Functional Neurologist can not only deter- mine which areas of a person’s nervous system are deficient, but also devise an appropriate treat- ment protocol to improve the quality of how their nervous sys- tem functions. Dr. Orlando received his diploma in neurology in 1996. He had the good fortune to study under the person often credited with the ori- gin of this specialty, Dr. Ted Car- rick, who has been researching and teaching this model since the mid-1970s. • Functional Nutrition - Also known as Functional Medicine is not considered alternative medi- cine, instead it is actually a research-based evolution in the practice of medicine, which better addresses your healthcare needs. By shifting the traditional disease- centered focus of a typical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. This approach is not only fundamental in concus- sion recovery, but it can also limit the effects of future concussions and therefore plays a vital role in concussion prevention. • Expert Chiropractic Care - When appropriate, specific chiropractic treatment and modalities will be applied to the spine and extremi- ties, in an effort to correct func- tional deficits of the musculoskele- tal and nervous systems. Dr Orlando has been certified in sports injuries and has worked with athletes for close to 30-years. During this time he had the pleasure of being the sports injury and medical consultant for elite high school and university programs and their athletes 1806 Springfield Avenue New Providence, NJ 07974
