HYDE PARK
ON THE HUDSON
By: Jill Stolz
Hyde Park, located in beautiful
Dutchess County, NY, is full of histori-
cal sites to visit and award-winning
places to eat. Hyde Park is home to the
homes of Franklin D. and Eleanor Roo-
sevelt, the Vanderbilt Mansion, and the
United States Military Academy at
West Point.
The
Home of Franklin D. Roo-
sevelt National Historic Site
pre-
serves the Springwood Estate, the
birthplace, home and burial place of
our 32nd President. The Colonial
Revival Style estate was purchased by
Roosevelt’s father in 1866 and was
continually enlarged and improved
over the course of his lifetime. In 1905,
Franklin and Eleanor moved in with his
mother, and in 1915, they doubled the
size of the home to accommodate
their family and entertain political
associates. Guests such as Winston
Churchill and European royalty were
received there. FDR was always in resi-
dence the night before a presidential
election and made his acceptance
speeches from the front terrace. The
interior contained the President’s sub-
stantial collections of books, paintings,
stamps, and coins. Outside, extensive
planting of trees created a forest-like
environment over a thirty-year period.
In 1943, Roosevelt donated the estate
to the US Dept. of Labor and it has
been open to the public as a National
Historic Site since 1945.
The
Eleanor Roosevelt National
Historic Site
at Val-Kill is a stone cot-
tage that Mrs. Roosevelt used for her
home, office, retreat and social gather-
ings. Today, the site’s Leadership Work-
shop offers programs designed to edu-
cate and empower young girls to
become social justice leaders. Pro-
grams are held seasonally to bring the
historic site closer to the community.
The
Vanderbilt Mansion National
Historic Site
is one of the prime exam-
ples of country estates built by wealthy
industrialists during the Gilded Age.
The magnificent grounds on the 211-
acre property lie along the east bank of
the Hudson River, offering majestic
views, formal gardens, natural wood-
lands and a 54-room mansion
designed by the acclaimed architectur-
al firm, McKim, Mead & White. Pur-
chased in 1895 by Frederick William
Vanderbilt, the home is a classic Beaux-
Arts structure, considered modern for
its time. Its interior is filled with a mix
of fine European antiques and crafted
period pieces. Shortly after Vanderbilt
died in 1938, most of the estate was
donated to the National Park Service.
The
United States Military Acad-
emy at West Point
was founded in
1802.
It is both a college campus and
a U.S. Army officer training and leader-
ship academy. Some of its most
notable graduates include Generals
Grant, Lee, Pershing, MacArthur,
Eisenhower, Patton, Schwarzkopf and
Patraeus. Steeped in U.S. military histo-
ry and set on a beautiful campus on
the bank of the Hudson, a tour of the
school is an education in itself. Desig-
nated a National Landmark, the entire
campus is home to historic sites, build-
ings, and monuments. Because it is a
U.S. Military property, only guided
tours are permitted.
If tours make you restless, or if you
have children with you who need to
release some energy, The
Hyde Park
Trail
is a trail system linking parks and
nature preserves together to create 16
miles of walking trails amidst nature
and historic sites. And, if you are an
adult-only group, you may want to visit
one of the three Hudson Valley Winer-
ies within 15 miles of Hyde Park.
Stop and dine at one of the five
public, award-winning restaurants of
the
Culinary Institute of America,
which boasts a large number of Iron
Chefs and Celebrity Chefs among its
alumni. Choose between the American
Bounty, featuring inspired foods of
America, the Apple Pie Baking Café for
baked goods and light fare, The
Bocuse for French-inspired cuisine, Ris-
torante Caterina de Medici for Italian
food from the Tuscan region, and St.
Andrew’s for farm-to-table cooking at
its finest. A retail store on the premises
sells cookbooks, kitchenware and
other culinary-related items.
Enjoy this lovely trip up the Hudson,
taking in the scenery, fresh air, historic
sites, outdoor activity and good food!
