ACUPUNCTURE:
DOES IT HURT? HOW DOES IT WORK?

The two most common ques-
tions that I get about acupunc-
ture are, one:
“
does it hurt?”
and two: “how does it work?” I
am going to address the first
question briefly and as honestly
as I can. I tell all my patients that
acupuncture does not hurt.
Nobody believes me until they try
it for themselves. Everyone has
different tolerances and thresh-
olds but I must clarify the types of
needles we use in acupuncture.
Acupuncture needles are sterile,
single use, solid filament needles.
They are not injection needles.
There is nothing to be injected or
to be withdrawn, hence the
acupuncture needles are very
thin and resemble pins more
than needle. On certain areas of
the body where there is less sen-
sitivity, insertions of the pins are
almost undetectable.
How does it work
depends on
what the practitioner does and
what is being treated. Acupunc-
ture is a tool, a method of treat-
ing something using pins and
manipulations of these pins. An
example of this would be using
acupuncture as a form of pas-
sive physical therapy. A basic
principle of physical therapy is
treating a muscular injury by
stretching and strengthening
the injured area. When there is a
muscular injury it usually
involves some sort of strain or
sprain from hyperextension or
something. The affected mus-
cles are most likely shortened
thus pulling, tugging, and creat-
ing stress on the attached site.
Therefore, lengthening the mus-
cle would ease the tension and
stress of the affected area,
resulting in less pain. Acupunc-
ture, in this case, would length-
en the injured muscles by pin-
ning the muscles and attaching
the pins to an external stimula-
tor. The external stimulator
would be emulating a gentle
pulse to the area. A tapping sen-
sation is felt by the patient, that
tapping is the stretching of the
muscle much like a light stretch-
ing of a rubber band. The result,
when the muscle is lengthened,
is also less pain. Sometimes
when patient cannot move the
area without pain to stretch the
area out, acupuncture can come
in quite handy since the patient
is not required to move.
There are a lot of different tech-
niques and applications that
may be used through acupunc-
ture. It all depends on what the
practitioner’s intentions are. The
pins are just tools, much like any
other tools; in the hands of
capable individuals, tools are
simply used to help achieve cer-
tain goals.
