THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION
FEBRUARY 2013

There is an old expression that says: In
life, it matters not who you are, it matters
not who you know, it only matters what
you do!
For 60 years, the past and present mem-
bers of the Watchung Lions Club have
followed this tradition, keeping a low
profile in the community, but working
diligently to raise funds to help truly
needy people, both close to home and
across the world.
2012
is another successful year for this
group, as they performed their work.
Through a series of fund raising efforts:
such as wine tasting events, golf outings
at the Watchung Twin Brooks Golf
Course and the Annual Christmas Party
at the Watchung Water and Wine restau-
rant, the group has built of network of
supporters, who generously donate funds
to support the Lions effort.
Throughout the year the Lions members
carefully vet requests for donations, and
identify those individuals and organiza-
tions that truly benefit from their support.
This year, approximately 36 charitable
organizations are identified and support-
ed via the Watchung Lions Club. Activi-
ties supported include ophthalmic and
medical research and treatment centers,
disaster relief organizations, community
food banks, women’s health and interven-
tional social services, local volunteer fire
and rescue squads, and scholarship funds
to help build a caring society.
This year, the Watchung Lions supported
a
Southern College of Optometry
stu-
dent, who donated her Spring Break to
perform volunteer eye screening services
for poverty stricken individuals. As a
member of her college’s team, they
screened and treated almost 20,000
needy people in one week.
Additionally, The Watchung Loins contin-
ued its tradition of supporting the Schol-
arship Foundation at the Raritan Valley
Community College. By ensuring that the
funding supports student scholarships, it
enables needy students to pursue their
education, to transfer to four-year institu-
tions or enter the workplace.
