Over this past year or so we have come to really appreciate our home and how important it is to our happiness. It is truly the only haven we have from this crazy world and we need it to feel cozy and joyful, like a big hug, when we get home! Trends for 2021 are all about experiencing comfort in our home by using color, texture as well as cheerful and nostalgic decorations in our living spaces.

“Granny Chic” – Minimalism is giving way to a more European style, using eclectic and interesting furniture and decorations that are sustainable and beautiful. People are looking for meaning and comfort in the items they surround themselves, like going to Grandma’s house, with antique furniture, crocheted throws, copper pots, wicker and rattan furniture which can all bring warmth and whimsy to a space without being cluttered.
More Color – We are trending away from a home decorated using only whites, browns and greys, which can be very cold and depressing. Color is very important in bringing life to a space; this year we are seeing softer greens, pinks and blues in decorating which evoke a feeling of nostalgia and romance. In cabinetry light and dark blues and greens are very popular used in combination with white cabinets and natural lighter wood cabinets. We are also seeing more colorful backsplashes in kitchens, mostly in greens and blues and fun patterns, replacing the white subway tile that has been so popular. Flooring is also getting a makeover, many are choosing terra cotta or brick floor to add a nice warmth and glow to any space.
Wall Décor – Walls are the perfect place to really show off your personality and make your home unique. Wallpaper in a floral print (thinking Grandma’s house again) or geometric pattern can easily make a room much more stylish and cozy. Adding tile in a herringbone or hand-painted pattern covering a wall from floor to ceiling in a powder room or kitchen is a great way to add texture. Replacing some of the upper cabinets in a kitchen with shelving will give you a great spot for good-looking dishware, an antique painting, or meaningful items from your travels.
Outdoors In – Bigger windows and lots of house plants are becoming a very popular way to make your indoors feel more like the outdoors. House plants have made a huge comeback, not surprising since they have been proven to improve your mood, as well as being beautiful and helpful in purifying the air in your home. Having larger windows will not only help your new houseplants but the extra light will help you be happier too.
Not so Open Concept – Many people are finding it is hard to contain the noise and messes in a big open space or great room. Being able to have a space away from a loud tv or a messy kitchen is becoming more desirable. So, incorporating pocket or French doors to separate spaces when needed, as well as using a peninsula or a half wall to break up the great room can be very helpful. It will also give you more places to put furniture and decorations.
