Just the idea of remodeling a home can make one feel anxious and overwhelmed. It’s difficult even knowing what the first step should be and who to go to for help. Our job as designers is to be a guide to help our clients navigate from design through installation. This means that finding the right designer is going to be the first and most important thing you do to embark on your remodeling journey.

Here are a few tips for finding a designer. If you are mostly painting and buying new furniture and curtains you will want the assistance of a good interior designer. If you are doing a kitchen or bathroom, or built-in cabinetry, hiring an experienced kitchen and bath designer is important because the construction of cabinetry, kitchens, and baths is very technical and there is a lot of coordination with many different trades like the plumber, electrician, and general contractor. Ask your friends, whose remodel you have admired, who they used, and if they would recommend them. Real estate agents are also a good resource; they have seen many kitchens and are often familiar with the local companies and their work.
Once you have the names of referred companies, set up a meeting with each designer and ask them to give you an estimate on your project. You will want to show your designer some pictures you like from magazines or Houzz/Pinterest that will help them understand you, your style, and your goals for the space. This will give the designer some direction when making finish selections and creating your budget. Make sure that the estimates include everything needed to complete the project such as electrical, plumbing, installation, tile backsplash, hardware, demo, etc. This will allow you to compare costs, the scope of work, and how each will approach your project.
The designer/construction company that you sCriteelect should be someone you can communicate easily with, who really understands your vision, who is passionate about creating a great design for you, and who you can trust to bring your vision to reality. Your finish selections will dictate much of the pricing, so this can be adjusted no matter which designer you select. This means you shouldn’t choose your designer based on price but on who will be your best guide on this long remodeling journey. Now it’s time to embark!
