We all want to feel good about ourselves. The success we have in many areas of our lives; personal and business, is largely dependent on the way we feel about ourselves. We have a lot of incentives! Yet, most of us are not successful in reaching our goals. The reason we are not successful in our efforts can be summed up by one word. Why.
You may be wondering what I’m talking about, so let me explain.
- If you have a strong “Why” you will have a greater chance for success. Mind over matter is not just a cliché. Your mindset can have a tremendous effect on your physical being. We often get caught up in cocktail party self-deprecating talk. Many of us would like to have bigger arms, six pack abs, lose a few pounds, or wear a special outfit. We often start our next attempt at fitness with such motivation. Such superficial reasons don’t generally lead to long lasting success. Dig down deep. Take some self-reflection. A deep emotional reason such as the desire to take care of yourself so that you can be there, to take care of those you care about, can act like a magnet to pull you towards your goal. This can be particularly effective during those times (and you will have those times) when you are feeling a little low.
- Why are you doing what you’re doing? The various exploits we hear at the local watering hole. The talk around the office. The funky looking movement you see someone attempting at the gym. Even the world class workout you read about performed by your favorite athlete can inspire some new exercise options for you. The missing part of the equation is the … why? We all have our own goals. And different goals require the application of different approaches. Each of these approaches requires different variables. While trying out some of those exciting moves may seem like fun, they may not do much to help you move closer to your goals. In fact, the only thing they may be moving you towards is an injury or your next big setback. Anytime you are working on your fitness the first thing that should come to your mind is: why? Why am I doing this exercise? Why am I going to benefit from this routine? Why should I do this? It is the why that will help you keep the path to your goals the shortest and straightest one to follow.
You don’t have to overcomplicate things. There are a lot of resources available to help modify behavior. Get an experienced buddy or spend a few dollars to hire a trainer to help you get started on the right foot. Asking the right questions can go a long way to developing the best answers to your, “why” questions. Making sure that your expectations are realistic, that you begin with a program that is appropriate for you, and that you have accountability is the surest way to be successful!
