Change is constant. It is one thing we can always count on. If that’s true, then why are we not that good at it yet?
On average 90% of people who make New Year’s resolutions quit within weeks. It’s so prevalent that January 17th is now sometimes referred to as “Quitter’s Day!” Most people not only give up on pursuing their goals, they also waste time, money, and energy on products, services, and/or apps in the process.
Why Most Quitters Quit
There is extensive research on the reasons why people fail more often than not when trying to make a change in their lives. In my work as a coach and communications advisor, I have encountered several common themes that support the research. To illustrate, let me introduce you to a client I have been coaching who is in a job search. We will call her Samantha (not her real name.)
In our first conversation, I asked Samantha what kind of job role she sought. She said she was unsure. When I asked what connections she was making as part of her search, she said she did not want to let people know she had lost her job. I then asked how her being in a job transition affected others. With the exception of its impact on her immediate family, she admitted that she had not given that any thought. When I then asked her what her next step would be, she shrugged. Overwhelmed, confused, and isolated, she felt paralyzed.
4Cs: The Ingredients For Successful Change
There is hope for Samantha and anyone facing change. My experience has helped me to identify four common ingredients for a successful approach to change. These four main ingredients are my Secret Formula for ChangeTM. When mixed together, they will increase your chances of success when making any change in your life.
1. You need CLARITY. Decide on one thing you want to change, then work toward that goal persistently. Progress over perfection is key.
2. You need CONNECTION. Actively invite others to help. Share what you’re doing and why. Seek advice, ideas, and referrals to others as you pursue your goal.
3. You need to CARE. Consider the effect the change you are making has on others. Actions speak louder than words.
4. You need COURAGE. Do something to move toward your goal. Take smart risks and act. You can’t lose; you will either win or learn.
Like most recipes, the 4Cs ingredients in my Secret Formula for ChangeTM work best when they are all in the mix together.
