The NJ BIZ Healthcare Hero Award recognizes healthcare professionals who have strived to improve healthcare quality in New Jersey through innovation.
Dr. Joseph Mejia, Medical Director at Performance Rehabilitation & Regenerative Medicine, was awarded the 2023 NJBIZ Health Care Hero Award for Healthcare Professionals. Triple board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Interventional Pain Management, and Sports Medicine, Dr. Mejia also has extensive training in Regenerative Medicine to treat advanced spine and joint conditions.
For more than fifteen years, Dr. Mejia has been at the forefront of eliminating the need for surgery with groundbreaking regenerative medicine procedures. Regenerative medicine deals with the process of regenerating the body’s tissues to facilitate healing. Dr. Mejia has been very successful in harnessing the body’s natural healing potential in procedures such as Adult Stem Cell Therapy, Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), and Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate, also known as BMAC, to treat common and complex orthopedic injuries.
According to Dr. Mejia, Regenerative Medicine is not for everyone. “Some patients with advanced conditions require alternative options and there are a vast number of them,” says Mejia. “But it all starts with getting to the root cause of people’s pain so that we can make proper treatment recommendations.” For patients with advanced conditions, looking to avoid joint or spine surgery, Dr. Mejia offers many minimally invasive procedures, such as MILD, Spinal Cord Stimulation, Peripheral Nerve Stimulation, and many more.
Dr. Mejia’s inspiration came from his parents, both of whom are physicians, and the impact they had on their community through medicine. After graduating from medical school in the Philippines, Mejia’s parents immigrated to a medically underserved area of West Virginia in the early 1970s, where they continued their medical training and then served the region for over 40 years. “They developed meaningful relationships, not only with their patients but also their community,” said Dr. Mejia.
When asked about the biggest challenge facing healthcare professionals in 2023, Dr. Mejia said, “The lack of collaborative and integrated care.” He explained that patients often see multiple healthcare providers, which causes confusion and inhibits or delays the patient’s ability to get better. “The solution is collaboration through a ‘team-based approach’ to treatment,” said Mejia. Dr. Mejia and his team at Performance collaborate across specialties to diagnose and treat each patient, leading to extraordinary patient outcomes. Dr. Mejia states that at Performance, the “state-of-the-art facilities allow patients to consult with medical physicians, various rehab specialists, and surgeons all under one roof and often on the same day.”
