Top 3 Ways to Make Your Fitness Resolution a Reality
By the time you are reading this eighty percent (80%) of all health and fitness resolutions have already failed. This isn’t because people don’t want to feel healthy and fit. It is because getting fit and healthy is tough. Fad diets and eight-minute workouts won’t get you where you want to be. A successful lifestyle transformation requires work and some successful planning. If you have started to test your convictions or have started to fall off the wagon, fear not. It is not too late to get yourself back on track. I have outlined the top three considerations you can make to help you get back on track. Make this year a success and not your most recent broken promise to yourself.
- Work within your capabilities. One of the main reasons that people fall off a new fitness routine is not beginning at an appropriate level. Following the workout of your neighbor, your favorite action star or an athlete that you pulled off the internet is a recipe for disaster. Beginning with a program that was designed for someone who is seriously fit will leave you vulnerable for injury. That is a sure way to put an end to even the best of intentions.
- Don’t set unrealistic goals. Another sure way to fail is to set unrealistic expectations. Let’s face facts you didn’t just wake up one day in your current state. Chances are it took you ten, fifteen or even twenty years of hard work to reach your current level of fitness or lack thereof. Returning to an ideal state of health or becoming the person you want looking back at you each time you walk past a mirror is not going to happen overnight. That is okay! Anything worth having is worth earning. You can’t go from sitting on your butt every day to seven days of ninety-minute workouts each week. You will either burn out or break down.
- Get an accountability buddy. You can be your own worst enemy. Don’t foolishly think that you will be able to change all on your own. Left on your own, it is too easy to fall back into bad habits and behaviors. It is too easy to skip your workout at the end of the day when you are tired. It is too easy to have that extra slice of pizza. Having someone to answer to or someone waiting for you at the gym can be the difference between success and failure.
Get an experienced buddy or spend a few dollars to hire a trainer to help you get started on the right foot. Making sure that your expectations are realistic, that you begin with a program that is appropriate for you, and that you have accountability is the surest way to be successful!
Remember today is the first day of the rest of your life.
