THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 8 theconnectionsnj.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 Many times, owners look online for answers to their dog’s behavioral issues asking vague questions and end up trying to solve a problem they misdiagnosed in the first place. It is important to speak with a professional to help you dig for details so you can work as a team to tackle the issue from the root. Fear, as a blanket term, is acquired in dogs in many ways and for many different reasons. It starts even before they are born: Genetics - Poor selective breeding or natural selection can set a dog up for more challenges than usual. Maternal stress while the puppy is still in the womb -This means the puppy is floating in stress hormones. The behavior of the mother while raising the puppy - Puppies raised by a mother who is exhibiting stress-related behaviors are more likely to behave that way too. It is important to note that these issues may have developed even before you got your hands on your new puppy. Once in human care (by the new owners or by the human caretakers of the litter), the puppy should start to be socialized. A lack of socialization within the critical socialization period (puppies, 8-16 weeks old), results in even more stress towards everything new. Although socialization has the word ‘social’ in it, it does not mean playing with littermates or other puppies in the neighborhood. Trainers love to educate clients on the true definition of socialization and how to execute it properly to have a happy puppy that is neutral in all kinds of environments. Our last candidate for developing fear in puppies is bad experiences - This coincides with socialization because we can expose our puppies to all kinds of stimuli, but, if the puppy does not feel happy while experiencing these new things, we are setting them up for feeling uneasy and scared. Behaviors have roots! If you keep cutting the weed, it will still come back and grow. This analogy is not only relevant to fear-related behaviors. It can be applied to any behaviors your puppy or dog is exhibiting that you find problematic. It is important to help our dogs grow by nurturing their roots and learning how to take care of them (mentally and physically). Sometimes we think that all that plants need is ample water and sunlight, but in fact, some don’t need that at all and end up suffering because of our general assumptions. Same with dogs! They are all different and have different needs. So now maybe you know why your dog is fearful. How do you address it? At My Dogs’ Got Class, we first address emotions not behaviors. As certified dog trainers, we would first ask you to paint us a picture of your dog so we can use our skills to deduce the cause. Sometimes, the cause is rooted very deeply and it is important to address it as such. We would need as much information as possible to be able to help your dog overcome these fear-related feelings and behaviors. We always help clients ask themselves why their dog is doing something unfavorable, instead of solely addressing the problem behavior that is being displayed. Speak with a professional at My Dogs’ Got Class so we can help you help your dog! Visit mydogsgotclass. com for more information. Is Your Dog Shy, Scared, Nervous, And Anxious? What can you do? A lack of socialization within the critical socialization period (puppies, 8-16 weeks old), results in even more stress towards everything new. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 12 theconnectionsnj.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 NOWOPEN! Our new state-of-the-art hospital is open! Services include: Like and Follow us on Facebook As we prepare to celebrate the holidays, many pet owners naturally want to include their beloved four-legged and furry family members in the festivities. This can be great fun for all, but here are just a few tips to keep your pet safe, healthy and happy during the holidays. When You Have to Travel: Holiday travel can be stressful for pets. Prior to travel make sure that your pet has had a recent veterinary examination and is healthy enough to travel. Some pets also benefit from prescription medications to reduce anxiety and motion sickness which you may want to discuss with your veterinarian. Also, make sure that your contact information is up-to-date on all pet ID tags and with microchip registries. Most pets go missing or get injured during the holidays either by jumping out of vehicles before someone has a good handle on their leash or because doors are left open more frequently as guests come and go. Even pets that might not usually attempt to escape the home through an open door may be more likely to flee due to anxiety brought about during busy holiday gatherings. Holiday Decorations: Many holiday decorations pose a threat to pet health and safety. Glittery, sparkly and shiny ornaments are particularly attractive to cats and may be accidentally ingested. Glass ball ornaments on a Christmas tree can be easily mistaken for balls by dogs who carry or chew on them, leading to ingestion of shards of glass. Curious pets, especially cats, may be prone to investigate or knock over holiday candles, particularly when they are lit. Strands of lights and the extra electrical cords that often accompany these and other holiday decorations may also be tempting for cats and some dogs to chew on. To reduce the risk of electrical shock or fire, you should unplug these prior to leaving the home or ensure that pets are securely locked out of areas with candles and cords when not under direct supervision. When Gifts Are Exchanged: Festive gift wrap with bows and ornaments can draw attention to holiday gifts and as a result, may be destroyed or ingested by pets. Curling ribbon is particularly attractive to cats, however, if ingested can cause severe intestinal damage due to its sharp edges and propensity to get caught in the intestinal tract. Also, be careful not to leave tasty holiday treats within reach of pets. Growing up, my elderly grandmother used to wrap boxes of chocolate for each of us and put them under the tree with tags signed by Santa. Despite reminders not to do so, Grandma commonly forgot. Our family’s Westie never failed to sniff out those boxes and eagerly consume their contents. Chocolate toxicity and subsequent emergency treatment practically became an annual tradition for her. Thankfully we always got her to the ER in time, but the outcome could have been grave had we not. Later in life, while working many holiday emergency shifts as a veterinarian I found Grandma wasn’t the only one. I also found myself on more than one occasion performing surgery to repair serious bite wounds on family dogs who had gotten into fights over treats. One particular case involved owners who had purchased a three-foot-long rawhide bone complete with a big red bow for both of their dogs to share. The size of the bone was more than enough for both dogs, but the owners somewhat naively expected the dogs would actually share. Although the dogs got along extremely well on a daily basis, sharing such a high value treat was way too much to expect of them. Even in a normally harmonious home, pets should be safely separated by gates or in crates where they can safely enjoy special treats without the threat of competition. When People Food is Shared: It’s hard to resist sharing holiday meals with our furry family members when their keen noses have sniffed them out and longing puppy dog eyes look up at you from beside the table. But many holiday foods are toxic to our pets including chocolate, onions, raisins, macadamia nuts, yeast dough, and fruit pits. Given that most pets eat the same thing every day, sudden introduction of any new food can lead to stomach upset. Fatty meats and cooked bones can also be particularly dangerous and can lead to vomiting and diarrhea, pancreatitis, and even intestinal obstruction, which can be potentially life-threatening. If you really want to share a holiday meal with your pet, it is best to cook them their own lean, white meat skinless, boneless, turkey or chicken breast and serve a very small portion of this with a small amount of rice, boiled white potato or sweet potato without butter. They’ll stay healthy, enjoy their special holiday meal and most importantly, enjoy their time with you. At KIND Veterinary Care Center, we are committed to providing exceptional and compassionate lifelong care for our patients. As a full-service veterinary hospital, we offer comprehensive and convenient medical, dental, and surgical services with a personal touch. The Schultz family has a rich history in the industry that spans 4 generations. The first founding generation originated in Berlin, Germany in 1913. Fearing the rise of Hitler and the Nazi movement, the second generation fled to the United States and settled in Newark, New Jersey on Bergen Street. The store was moved to the Short Hills area in the early 1960s where it remains to this day run by the third generation, Robert and Christine Schultz, and their son Ashley of the fourth generation. Being in business for over 100 years gives a clear perspective of changes in the style and mindset of the consumer. From stoles and capelets worn with gloves; Persian Lamb coats with matching hats; the glamorous fox coats of the 1980s; the Schultzes have SEEN IT ALL and DONE IT ALL. Styles come and go and sometimes return. Black tie affairs are few and far between, if not non-existent. Work attire has gone from “casual Fridays” to “casual every day”. To stay competitive in the fashion industry, a successful company needs to “roll with the trend”. The luxury outerwear business has evolved into just that. The Schultz’s showroom which once consisted of only full-length coats that were of a serious nature to be worn with a gown has now transformed into jackets and kneelength garments to be worn with jeans or leggings. Vibrant colors and combing of materials are what is in vogue today. Cashmere, leather, goose down, alpaca, shearling, as well as traditional furs curated in modern colors and silhouettes, dominate demand in the market today. The Schultz & Blaustein clientele continued to search for statement outerwear garments to join their winter wardrobe. The styles may change, but that fact remains true today. Longevity such as this does not happen by chance. The Schultz Family excels in customer service and providing the best quality for a fair price. They have purchased or have been recommended for future service by over a dozen furriers who have retired over the years. The service end of their business has grown to over 9000 coats in storage. All work is performed on sight by old-world craftsmen. The company prides itself on its creativity and design insights when restyling outdated garments. Bring in an old, tired garment and watch as it is reimagined into something current and relevant. Whether it be to purchase a new item, remodel an old coat, have something cleaned, or stored for the summer, or simply sew a button, the Schultz family welcomes all. Almost as invigorating as my body stretching, balance and strengthening workout, getting my brain to exercise is another goal I take very seriously. Opening my phone to the Wordle site, I was challenged by what word would be my “starter” that day. In speaking with friends and family, I am aware that some people use the same word every day, while others switch it up…I am a “switch it up” girl who looks to the universe for my starter. Regardless of how I come to the word, my reaction is always the same…a smile when I see green and a frown when it is all gray. This morning, my starter word led me to the “word of the day” in three tries, and I felt very satisfied. Jumping up to tell Bruce of my success, I nearly yelled out the word, only to realize that I would be committing social contract suicide if anyone who had not solved the puzzle overheard. To say that Wordle now has a prominent place in our societal history is an understatement, and its popularity has spread like wildfire! What is it about Wordle, Waffle Game, Candy Crush and countless others that have us absolutely consumed? For many years I never missed the Crypto Quote in the newspaper. No longer having access to it, I must find several games and puzzles to satisfy my need to regularly challenge myself. I reference my aging stage of life as my motivation, assuming that most players are on in years. However, in fact, these games are incredibly popular and important to people of all ages, including those much, much younger. Is it the competition? Or the camaraderie of so many doing the same healthy thing every day? When my friend told me that her son and his friends invited her to a “group play” which meant all of them started with the same word each day, I thought it fantastic - A seventy-something playing “with/against” forty-somethings. The odds are that there are days when she is the big winner, having a killer vocabulary, and days when their ability to recall words easily is greater than hers. My daughter, Alli, is a school social worker and she shared with me that the teacher of a 4th Grade summer school program did Wordle with her class each morning. This put a huge smile on my face as I envisioned the class deciding on each word they would enter. Going through my own litany of choices, I wondered if they chose words with the most frequently used letters e, s, and t. Did they focus on vowels or consonants? Did they start with the same or a different word each day? And at the end of the week, did they add new words to their vocabulary? Did even one child feel empowered by a new skill they didn’t know they owned? Bravo is the five-letter word that comes to mind! There is one more part of Wordle that continues to amaze me, and that is the social contract. Nobody ever wants to betray the word before others have had a chance to play each day. No doubt, that has to do with the fact there is only one word every 24 hours, and we are all quite obsessed with these games. In fact, Wordle is my springboard for Spelling Bee, Letter Boxed, Waffle Game, etc., etc., etc. Nothing replaces my Crypto Quotes, but boy, these games do keep me busy, and hopefully, my mind a little sharper when I start deciphering the new Crypto code again. There is one more part of Wordle that continues to amaze me, and that is the social contract. Nobody ever wants to betray the word before others have had a chance to play each day. Why Wordle? THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 26 theconnectionsnj.com NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2022/JANUARY 2023 My business partner, John, settled into the Starbucks in downtown Portsmouth, NewHampshire, to take a short break and check his messages before making the short drive to his home in York, Maine. A couple was seated at an adjacent table. The man spoke to John in a southern accent, “Are you from around here?” John responded that he used to live around the corner. Turns out the couple was visiting and wanted some local information on things to do. John called attention to the southern accent and asked, “Where you from?” “We’re from Arkansas. I’m Mark Pryor. I spent a couple terms in the US Senate.” “I know who you are. I’m a politics junkie.” They continued to talk. Eventually, Senator Pryor asked John what he did for a living. John explained that he had spent most of his career in agriculture including running a large cotton company, which took him to Arkansas frequently. John continued, “In fact, I have a crazy Arkansas story to tell you. When I had some business problems there, I was introduced to a sheriff there, by the name of Bobby…” Pryor interrupted and completed John’s sentence with Bobby’s last name, “…May. I know him well.” On separate occasions, they were invited to Bobby May’s residence. While seated at the dining room table, May told them about his work for Bill Clinton in organizing the local area for Clinton’s first presidential run. May went on to show them the same artifacts and a sword mounted on the wall. He also detailed his clandestine negotiations, on behalf of the Clinton administration, with Muamar Qaddafi’s regime; the perpetrator of the Pan Am flight 103 bombing that took the lives of 270 people over Lockerbie, Scotland, on December 21, 1988. It was incredible that Arkansan Mark and Mainer John found an intersection in their lives through a chance meeting in a Portsmouth coffee shop. Perhaps even more bizarre was the identical experience they had with Bobby May and a little-known part of a dark period in our country’s history. For over thirteen years I’ve enjoyed presenting factual stories with unusual connections, all true. I look forward to continuing that tradition. If you enjoy this column, you may want to check out my debut novel, Elusive Links, a fictional connection story, taking place in 1492 and 2002. It should be published the week of November 15th by Amazon Books. Up to date information can be found at danarosenberg. com (note my middle initial). Some people may find the connections in Elusive Links farfetched. However, if you’re a regular reader of this column, you might have a different perspective.
