As we welcome the arrival of spring, we are delighted to present to you the latest edition of the Warren-Watchung Connection. This issue is dedicated to celebrating the beauty of nature’s new blossoms, the excitement of new growth, and the joy of warm weather. Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation, and what better way to embrace this spirit than by exploring the new businesses that have recently opened their doors. In addition to celebrating the arrival of spring, we are thrilled to announce that this issue will be dedicated to highlighting Woman-Owned Businesses. As a fellow business owner, it’s truly inspiring to see the hard work and dedication of other women in the business world. We’re honored to have them featured in this issue, and we support and stand by them in their entrepreneurial journey. Take a look at our Women-Owned Directory and see how many small businesses in our towns are owned by women. Together, we can uplift and empower one another to achieve greater success. These entrepreneurs have entrusted us with spreading the word about their ventures, inviting you to patronize their establishments. Let’s come together and show our support for them. We encourage you to take the time to peruse this issue and discover the hidden gems that await you in our community. Our Community News column features the good works of nourish.NJ. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 10 APRIL/MAY 2024 theconnectionsnj.com An integral part of a well-designed financial plan is tax management. Each tax season investors look back at the monies paid for taxes and search for better methods to save. Tax efficient investing at Shapiro Financial Group, involves proactive planning, execution, and monitoring. Utilizing 80 years of experience and the depth of Raymond James resources, we seek to construct personalized strategies to minimize taxes for the current investor and for the generations to come. While capital gains are taxed at lower rates than ordinary income, they should be managed. Actively managed mutual funds are not tax efficient and are best served in retirement accounts. Mutual funds pass investors net gains, not losses, and even in years in which the fund may experience a decline in value. A separately managed account (SMA) for stocks or bonds provides the benefits of direct ownership. This includes the opportunity to harvest losses and control capital gains. Tax loss harvesting for fixed income has been timely given the rapid rise in interest rates. Investors have benefited from rising stock prices, some with outsized gains or concentrated positions. Some examples are large positions in mega technology stocks, concreted positions from employment, and embedded gains from an SMA. The sale or diversification of these positions can result in significant tax liabilities. At Raymond James, however, there are Direct Index tools available to help qualified investors. Direct Indexing attempts to maximize after-tax wealth in an SMA. An advantage of the Direct Index is that it can be funded using your existing stock portfolio, cash, or other approved assets. Portfolio managers use active tax loss harvesting techniques to offset realized gains in the portfolio. Tax-managed strategies such as Direct Indexing can help alleviate tax liability, minimize capital gains, and plan for future events. By now, my readers and clients can recognize my affection for tax-free income. When considering marginal combined Federal and State rates, investors would lose more than half of their taxable interest to taxes. A well-constructed professional municipal portfolio includes consideration of credit quality, duration, issuer, call protection, and current cash flow. Here are a few tips. After the expansion of the alternative minimum tax (AMT) exemption, investors should consider the added yield from selected municipal bonds that pay interest subject to AMT. Further, avoid deep discount municipal bonds, which are typically lower than current coupons and may create taxable original issue discount (OID) income. Our practice is skilled in advanced planning techniques. Sophisticated financial plans commonly utilize trust(s) to achieve goals. The step-up market value adjustment at the time of death remains a valuable resource. A common error is funding trusts during one’s lifetime with highly appreciated assets. The beneficiary assumes the donor’s basis, thereby missing out on the stepped-up tax basis adjustment, subjecting the beneficiary to additional capital gains. The current estate and gift tax exemption of $13.61M per person provides relief and opportunity to many. However, this window may close at the end of next year. The exemption is scheduled to revert to prior levels of $5M indexed for inflation. We help clients, along with their legal counsel, design and implement sophisticated financial plans to maximize and retain wealth while minimizing taxes. As a boutique firm, we provide personalized service to our clients. We believe that efficient tax management can add meaningful long-term returns. If you can benefit from professional investment management along with advanced financial planning, I invite you to contact me directly. I welcome the opportunity to help you and your family prosper. THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 12 APRIL/MAY 2024 theconnectionsnj.com As Generation X becomes the middle generation, they are faced with a unique set of challenges. Gen Xers are raising high school and college-aged children while caring for aging parents and managing their own estate and financial planning needs. As a Gen Xer, your adult children still need you, but legally you are no longer able to make financial or health care decisions for them after they turn 18. Every child above the age of 18 should have Powers of Attorney for Health Care and Assets and possibly a will. On the other side, Gen Xers are caring for their aging parents. Do your aging parents have their estate plan in place and is it updated with current law? Powers of Attorney for Assets should not be older than 3 years. If your parents become incapacitated and they do not have current legal documents in place, it will be necessary to go to court to be able to manage their health care and financial decisions. This is very expensive, embarrassing, and the courts are in control rather than the family. In addition to your kids and aging parents, is your own Estate and Financial Planning updated? Let’s delve into some essential techniques Gen X can utilize in their estate planning journey. Create a Will or Revocable Living Trust: These legal instruments are the foundational documents in estate planning. They ensure your assets will be distributed as you wish after your passing without state interference. Your adult children might need a Will or Trust and your parents should definitely have a Will and possibly a Trust. You need to ensure your family’s Estate Plans are up to date. Revocable Trusts are utilized over Wills to avoid probate, to consolidate assets, to disinherit certain heirs, and to handle property out-of-state or complex distributions. Powers of Attorney: Planning for medical and financial emergencies is essential for individuals of all ages. Gen Xers should have a Healthcare Power of Attorney, Living Will, and Power of Attorney for Assets with trusted individuals appointed to make decisions on their behalf. If you have adult children off to college, they should have Powers of Attorney in case you need to step in and make health care and financial decisions for them. Your aging parents absolutely need to have these documents in place, and they should be reviewed and updated accordingly. Regular Review and Updates: Estate planning is not a one-time task but a continuous process that requires regular review and updates. Gen Xers should revisit their estate plans periodically, especially during significant life events such as marriages or changes in financial circumstances. The Law Office of Gail L. Abrams located at 7 Johnston Drive, Watchung, NJ 07069, Phone 908-753-4155 specializes in estate planning for all generations. Contact the law office to set up a consultation to review your family’s estate and financial planning needs. By seeking guidance from The Law Office of Gail L. Abrams, an estate planning attorney who cares about securing and protecting your family’s future, Gen X can ensure the protection and well-being of loved ones across generations. Fashion bloggers and influencers have become mainstream, but their fashion sense has not. Fashion is seemingly in their hands, producing reviews and opinions without any regard for what everyday men actually wear. Their only goal is to sell a product a company paid them to promote. At Adams Fine Clothing, we take pride in our ability to help men stay up to date with their sartorial needs while keeping them grounded in timeless looks. Our in-store shopping experience gives us a unique advantage over online shopping. Our clients get a full education on their purchase and can see, touch, and try everything on with the help of an experienced consultant creating a more informed buying process. Each of our clients is unique, so their style should be unique to them as well. Lighten Up! Spring is always the best time to bust out those lighter colors. From your suits to your polo shirts, embrace the lighter colors and soak up that sunshine. Suiting Up: Not So Seriously Wearing a suit doesn’t have to be a pain or something you’re forced to do. Every year the suit gets easier to wear for guys, with unconstructed jackets (no heavy interior canvas) still reigning supreme.Color-wise, we always like to lighten up as well. Medium blue and grey are always the most popular, but this spring you’ll also see some earth tones as well in shades of brown, olive, and sage. FASHIONFLASH Spring Style Scoop By David Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedos Polos: Not Just for Golf Polos are your best friend this spring. Why? Because you can wear it with ANYTHING. Suit? Check. Jeans? Check. Shorts? Check. Material-wise, we love lightweight cotton, performance blends, and even dressier linens and silks. Start with a neutral color and you’ll be shocked at how much they go with. Pants: Get Dusty Gone are the days of “go to hell” pants. This season we’re focusing on what we call “The Dustys” in soft colors. Shades of lavender, orange, and baby blue make a great versatile pair of pants that don’t scream “Look at me.” Dress Shirts: Perfect in Pastels Perfect in Pastels Looking into your closet I bet you have a lot of blue and white shirts. Nothing wrong with that. But this season give your outfit a springtime lift with a pastel pink or lilac shades. Want to subtly stand out this wedding season? Throw on a pastel shirt with your suit and try to keep track of all the compliments you’ll get. Lavender and Sage: Calming Candles or Seasonal Sportcoats? Lavender and sage have always been important spring colors. But this year they’ve taken center stage as your new favorite sport coat. We find they work best when they’re the lead singer of your look. This boils down to keeping your shirts and trousers neutral and letting these beautiful colors do what they do best. Some of you will recognize me. I’m Tara from the former Wine Central’s 10 Below in Warren, where I was a wine buyer and manager for four years. I’m very excited to say I’m embarking on a new venture-opening Legacy Wine & Spirits Legacy Wine & Spirits with my brother Brook (the handsome guy pictured with his dog Beau.) Brook and I are the third generation of a long line of entrepreneurs. Together we’re looking forward to working alongside each other to continue our family legacy of entrepreneurship which began in the 1930’s. Our grandfather came to America from Germany in 1922 at nineteen years old. He was followed by his brother and other siblings. In the 1930s, they opened Pickwick Liquors and Pickwick Delicatessen on Park Ave. in Plainfield. Another of his siblings owned Robert Treat Delicatessen and Robert Treat Liquors in Westfield. Our grandfather then opened Echo Lanes and Lounge in 1950 in Mountainside. Later, our parents carried on the family entrepreneurial tradition by entering the liquor industry, followed by my- CONNECTION COMMENDS self and my brother, with five stores. I was a psychology major and had no plans to join the liquor business-other than to consume it. We plan, and yet life takes us elsewhere. I wore many hats as a wine buyer, manager, and owner, and consulted with other stores. My passion lies in finding staggering wines for the money, wines with soul, and then sharing them with you. Brook is a Craft Beer expert. He has extensive experience, having managed a high-volume store in Flemington for 4 years. He also worked for nearly 10 years with Hunterdon Brewing, which had the largest and most sought-after craft beer portfolio in the Tri-State area. Quickly, Brook became a highly respected top sales rep, managing a hundred accounts across Hunterdon and Somerset counties, until he took a promotion to Brand Manager. He’s kind, funny and you’ll always feel welcome in his presence. Brook has a special place in his heart for dogs, and his dogs have truly been his best friends. Legacy Wine & Spirits will be a fullscale store with recognizable brands and highly rated, organic, and sustainable wines. We intend to focus on education- offering classes, tastings, and so much more!! Continuing in the spirit of 10 Below, we’re looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. We feel that what sets us apart is our connection with all of you. We will strive to make the store a place where everyone knows your name... Please email, say hello and we’ll be sure to let you know when we open. Cheers! 325 Rt. 22 East Green Brook, NJ legacywinenj@gmail.com By Tara Arnold

SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 24 theconnectionsnj.com Finding a “one-stop shop” when it comes to a salon is crucial. We all know what it’s like to have a favorite salon for nails, a place we like for hair and makeup, and then a place in the next town over for waxing or a spray tan. But what if you could get everything in one place? At Moxie Salon and Beauty Bar’s newest location in downtown New Providence, you can. The franchise has various locations throughout the Garden State (as well as ones in Connecticut and NY) but owner and operator, Melissa Smith, was looking to find just the right community. “Once you step into Moxie, you are family,“ she says, “you feel at home, and you just know you’re going to see familiar faces!” Having loved the beauty industry since she was young, this business venture seemed like a natural fit. Smith, who is also a full-time realtor, said, “I thought it would be tough to find a business opportunity to compete with something as exciting as finding people their dream homes, but I was lucky enough to. Making people look and feel amazing is so rewarding. The best part is that we do so affordably. I couldn’t be more excited to offer this to the New Providence community.” Moxie Salon and Beauty Bar opened in early March and caters to its clients seven days a week, anytime from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. for hair (extensions, Keratin treat- CONNECTION COMMENDS ments, blowouts, coloring, haircuts, and styling), eyelash extensions, nails (gel and regular manicures), spray tanning, facial waxing, and makeup application appointments. They also feature the ever-popular, “Moxie Makeover” which includes a few of the above luxuries done in one day, at one place. “We’re ready to ‘Moxify’ New Providence!” Smith says. Moxie has a membership program as well, with great perks for their clients. Kelly Galvin is the managing partner working alongside Smith and has been in the Moxie family for seven years, previously managing the Montclair location. As a long-time area resident, she says the great location is what drew her in. She loves the New Providence community. Both women remarked on the fun ways customers can utilize Moxie, such as by throwing their little ones a glam party at the salon or hosting a girl’s night out party there where friends can get pampered together. The salon sells its own lines of makeup and hair products (Get Moxified), as well as offering Kerasilk, IGK, and ColorWow brands to achieve the glam look you’re seeking while at home. For color clients, Moxie uses the esteemed Goldwell color line to keep hair healthy and looking its best. Smith put it perfectly when she said, “In New Jersey, we’re busy. We want to look great, but we want to get in and out.” At Moxie, you can get it all done enjoyably and quickly while feeling like you have your own glam squad. SHOPPING, DINING, BEAUTY & EVENTS PAGE 26 theconnectionsnj.com 35 YEARS SERVING OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY THANK YOU FOR YOUR LOYAL PATRONAGE 908.757.1100 WARRENCOUNTRYEVENTS.COM 164 Washington Valley Rd. Ext, Warren • Gifts • Floral Design • Weddings • Event Planning LOCAL DELIVERY Celebrating Julie Conley loves a good party, and for 35 years she has enjoyed helping others relish in the same joy. The local florist and event planner at Warren Country Warren Country Florist and Events started her business with her beloved late mother, who had an eye for creativity and the most beautiful garden. “I was brought up with parents who loved food, flowers, fashion, music, and the arts,” she says. This led to her interest in event planning. “In high school, I always planned the party; what we were eating, wearing, and drinking,” she recalls. “I started my own catering company in my late 20s after being in the corporate world for a while.” She loved to decorate ice sculptures with flowers in them, and color coordinating food with flowers. “A client saw my designs and said I should buy the local Warren florist that was for sale,” she says, “My mother was retired and helped me purchase it in 1991. She became my partner with a third partner who worked at the florist.” After the first year her partner left, and she and her mother were on their own. “I started party planning the following year. My parents threw avid parties, and I thought I could do it!” “I think of the countless times I quietly sat with a grieving family and guided them through the most difficult time in their lives,” she says. “The babies I welcomed with baskets of flowers...the weddings and celebrations in the best part of people’s lives!” Her constant love of learning and never giving anything less than 150% to every job is what keeps CONNECTION COMMENDS her coming back day after day to Warren Country Florist and Events. “My staff and I flew to Orlando once to create a Johnson & Johnson event that kicked off their latest drug,” she remembers, “We hired local police officers to build the sets and we created a press event and a gala. I hired Cirque du Soleil to be the main entertainment! We spent our days working and our nights at Disney. We ended the success with 7-pound lobsters!” It is memories like that which she will never forget. Or other memories-like the cake she designed for a local couple who was finally pregnant after 11 years of hoping. “The cake was yellow and had all the words written on it that described how wonderful this was for them. They named their baby ‘Grace’,” she fondly recalls. She has done over 10,000 events, thousands of daily arrangements, and ten years of being on internationally syndicated television. “I once hosted a show called, Whose Wedding Is It Anyway?” she says. Conley knows none of this would have been possible without her mother and four sisters, friends, wonderful staff, and extended family over the years. “It’s been a wonderful life working with the local community and people from all over the country,” she says. There are clients of Warren Country Florist and Events who came to her for years for their holiday decorating and floral gifts who she has helped when their children grew up and were getting married and having their own babies. If it weren’t for her local, loyal customers supporting her small business, they would not be here anymore. Reasons like that are why she is extremely grateful for Warren Country Florist and Warren Country Florist and Events and for her community.
