A true master of acrylic on board, Matthew’s passion for painting knows no bounds, and his favorite medium becomes a canvas for his unique pop art style. Enlivening the female form with vivid colors and abstract shapes, Matthew’s artistry embodies a kaleidoscope of beauty, making his distinct style unmistakably his own. Matthew’s journey into the art world began in the heart of the East Village, where he resided during the late 1980s while attending The Cooper Union. There, he delved into the realms of engineering and art, forging a unique blend of technical precision and creative expression that define his art today. Whether you’re a seasoned art enthusiast or a curious passerby, Matthew Stock’s art is an invitation to immerse yourself in a world where beauty knows no bounds and where the human form becomes a canvas of mesmerizing colors and shapes. Luna is the title of our cover art, painted in acrylics by Matthew Stock. His art has been inspired by some of the “greats” such as, Wassily Kandinsky, Roy Lichtenstein, and Marc Chagall. He has also found inspiration from comic book legends. His sight of a woman lying in a field of flowers was his motivation for this colorful painting in which he transmutes an ordinary scene into an extraordinary piece of art. We hope this November Holiday issue fills your heart with joy and anticipation for the festivities ahead. Whatever holiday you celebrate during this time, we wish you a winter season brimming with love, laughter, and cherished memories. Embrace the magic of this extraordinary time, and may it bring you closer to those who matter most. Happy holidays from all of us here at The Connection Magazines. theconnectionsnj.com HOLIDAY CHEER PAGE 14 Today’s shoppers are looking for real value which is measured in their overall satisfaction of each purchase. They want simplicity in all aspects of their lives. Exhausted from the lack of service and quality at big box stores and the isolation of shopping online, shoppers are flocking to smaller local businesses. And why not? A well-run, local business will offer lower prices, better quality, and superior service employing devoted sales help that will support you through every aspect of your purchase and take the time to get to know you and your sartorial needs. Additionally, shopping at a small business that specializes in a particular type of product yields significantly higher customer satisfaction and a return rate often less than 1%, as compared to online clothing returns which are 25%. Shopping online has its conveniences, but it’s far from the best option. Let’s be honest, what could be better than actually seeing the product, feeling the fabric, trying things on with the advice of a helpful sales person, combined with the one stop shopping in our in-store alteration department. No hassles of trial and error returns that inevitably come with online shopping. At Adams Fine Clothing, every customer matters. Our reputation thrives on customers sharing their shopping experience and our ability to motivate them to return often. Here are some of the fashion trends you will find at our store this season: You Autumn Know by Now Temperatures are dropping and our minds are subconsciously shifting to those fall clothes. At Adams, we’re excited to showcase our fall collection, which focuses on modern styles, versatility and comfort at great values. Suiting: Peaking Your Interest New and modern trim silhouettes suiting in shades of navy blue and gray are the most popular choices; we’re seeing a slight tweak that brings it into 2023-a peak lapel. A peak lapel of moderate width can bring a sharp sophistication to your FASHIONFLASH Falling into Fashion By David Marzano Manager, Adams Fine Clothing and Tuxedos suited up looks and set you apart in a sea of notch lapels. Sport Coats: Soft but Sexy During the pandemic tailoring took a major turn. Jackets were being made softer, with no canvas or shoulder pads. This resulted in a coat that is as comfortable as a sweater, but still looks great with a tie. And at Adams, that’s the kind of versatility we can get behind. Blue and earth tones are still popular, but this season’s most popular colors are purple and green (not together though). Pants: Darken that Denim In spring we had two words for you: Five Pockets. And we still have those two words for you this fall! Five pockets in denim or cotton twill are that perfect in between pants that look great with a chunky sweater and boots or a sport coat and dress shoes. Our favorite colors this year are charcoal gray, navy blue and chocolate brown! Sweaters: Knitted Out When it comes to sweaters, I bet you already have all the basics-merino wool, cotton, maybe even some cashmere. This season pick up something special like Royal Alpaca. A sustainably-harvested wool that accounts for 1-3% of Alpaca products worldwide, this lightweight, yet durable fabric keeps you warm when you’re cold and reverses property and actually cools you down when indoors. Whether in a ¼ zip, cardigan or classic crew neck, you’ll never want to take it off. Outerwear: Best of Both Worlds Outerwear is confusing. The styles are plentiful which isn’t the best for the modern guy. At Adams, we firmly believe a guy doesn’t need a lot of choices, he needs the right choices. There’s only two pieces guys need until it’s time to take out the topcoats: the vest and the shacket. A lightweight vest can be easily layered over a sweater or a sport coat and can be just as easily folded up and stored for those sunny fall afternoons. Since the pandemic the word “hybrid” is in everyone’s vocabulary and the shacket is the ultimate hybrid. Lighter than a jacket but heavier than a shirt, this is the most versatile casual piece for the fall. You can wear it with joggers and a tee shirt for a coffee run or wear it with jeans and flannel for a more rugged look. Big wool includes Bulky, Super Bulky and Jumbo yarn where the stitch count is 3, 2 and 1 stitch per inch, respectively. This means that projects can be started and completed in 1-2 sittings and the results are super cute. Project ideas are for everyone. Here are some of my favorites that will get you checking off that to do list 1-2-3. There are gift ideas to cover everyone on your list. Most patterns listed here are free downloads on Ravelry.com. For All Hats are a perfect gift and there are so many choices. Here are a few that come in a variety of sizes to cover the entire family. Add a handmade wooly pom-pom, faux fur or the real deal variety. Store bought pom-poms are often detachable for easy cleaning if/ when the hat needs a dip. Any pom-pom can be made detachable by adding a large snap to the pom-pom and the opposite end to the hat’s crown. theconnectionsnj.com SENIOR LIVING PAGE 34 There is a clubhouse where we live. It is the center of our social life, and I find myself drawn there several times a week. The beauty of it is that in addition to food and beverage, there are other people, also enjoying the socialization. Whether it is Trivia Night, Bingo, movies, a cover band or other entertainment, cards or Mah Jongg, there is always something to do, always someone to meet, and a means of staying involved with the outside world. Engaging with people of different ages is refreshing, and there are days when being 70-something makes me older than others and days when I am the younger one at the table. Additionally, I love having a reason to get dressed and put on my best smile! In essence, Independent or Assisted Living facilities are similar. There are others with whom to have a conversation, food and beverage, games and movies, connections that bring people together, and shared experiences. Although the residents are usually senior in age, some are younger in spirit and that can radiate to other residents. The ability to discuss shared memories is very compelling. In contrast, living in one’s room or apartment with no company but the television and eating meals in solitude, the hours slowly ticking by can create a sense of loneliness that is untenable and deleterious for the health of seniors. Many enter these facilities thin and weakened, having lost their appetite not only for food, but for life. Remarkably, engaging with others at mealtime or snacking with a group can rapidly return the resident to their full vitality. Many facilities make meals and snacks the center of the day, posting menus and even having the meals on display. At some facilities, the residents have positions of importance, such as running the Country Store or helping with crafts. Having the ability to feel strong, capable, and yes, even younger, is wonderful. Also, many want to share their past with new friends and can do so by discussing their careers, family, pets or friends. The Baby Boomers are aging and our numbers are enormous. We always envisioned ourselves as forever young. Although that was hubris and quite foolish-we are the generation that has created ways of maintaining our youth longer than any before us. By running, working out, lifting weights, and living socially, we are working to make our lives as long and as meaningful as possible. I see no evidence that we will ever change! SENIOR CORNER Socializing May Be the Key to Longevity By Ellyn Mantell Remarkably, engaging with others at mealtime or snacking with a group can rapidly return the resident to their full vitality. 908-580-3840 fellowshipvillage.org Extraordinary FROM ORDINARY TO Envision-inspired adult living in Basking Ridge, NJ!

theconnectionsnj.com SENIOR LIVING PAGE 36 Although it is old news that “youth is wasted on the young,” I am extremely aware that there is never an end to growing and evolving. The other side of that is looking back and wondering what was in my mind when I made certain decisions, accepted certain precepts, and acted or reacted to certain events. In actuality, I wish I knew that whatever I thought was so important at the time, would simply become part of the tapestry of my life, and that would actually empower me to live a better life. Raising our two daughters at a time when women were terribly conflicted about their decision to stay home with their children or enter the workforce, I knew my needs. My desire to have a career made other women uncomfortable. I was told, more than once, that my decision to have a career meant less time with my girls, and they would suffer from it. I agonized. I wish I had known then that my daughters would grow and develop into dynamic women, with families and careers that fortify them. They never questioned their decision to have a family and a career. It was simply imprinted upon them they could do both. Our relationship is better than ever because they understand what drove me to develop my many aspects, follow my dreams, and answer whatever calling I felt. I wish I knew that while I was following my dreams, I encouraged my beautiful girls to follow theirs. Now they are doing the same for their own beautiful daughters. So much of my early years were spent second-guessing and doubting myself. It is hard to move forward when expending so much energy looking backward. This amount of energy exerted in caring how others saw me was wasteful. Looking back, making others responsible for what I saw in the mirror kept me from developing my own perspective. What I wish I knew was that I was exactly who I needed to be at the time, and at each juncture, I am exactly who I am meant to be. One of my many careers brought me to a large office building, and walking into work each morning meant seeing familiar faces. I frequently, genuinely, complimented my co-workers on their outfits or lipstick or said good morning to others. I was reprimanded for being “too friendly” and I took it very hard. For days, I walked into the building with a pit in my stomach, having no idea how to act. What I wish I knew is that there will always be people who are uncomfortable with the actions of others and perhaps my desire to offer kindness wasn’t part of the company culture. Maybe my behavior was just annoying to some. But it was never intentional, and for the few women who felt better on days I complimented them, I was a positive. I wish I knew that in order to do the job I was hired to do, I needed to be who I was, and not a cookie cutter of others in the building. Lastly, like all who are human, I have made mistakes…many of them! I used to feel very bad about myself when I did so and I would become lost in my own self-punishment. I felt like the centipede who was asked by the fly how he knew which of his many legs he should move next. The centipede became immobilized, unable to verbalize how he simply just moved forward. I became immobilized by my own negative self-judgment, assuming others felt negatively about me. What I wish I knew is that letting go of self-doubt is a great strength, a skill one can hone, one that has incredible benefits. Feeling positive and self-assured brings others toward us because it is more inviting to be with those who radiate pleasure rather than negativity. I wish I knew this, and so much more. But then again, the beauty of growing and evolving is the opportunity to look back and try again. This, I actually do know…at least for today! SLICE OF LIFE What I Wish I Knew By Ellyn Mantell Feeling positive and self-assured brings others toward us because it is more inviting to be with those who radiate pleasure rather than negativity.

THE WARREN-WATCHUNG CONNECTION PAGE 38 NOV 2023-JAN 2024 theconnectionsnj.com I am pleased to share my top tax and financial tips for 2023. The selection process was difficult given the abundance of issues created by evolving tax rules, fastpaced capital markets, and post-pandemic economic issues. The list was created by my 40 years of experience and client interactions. Interest Rates Interest rates have climbed sharply from historic lows to near-cycle highs. Cash and fixed income now has a real return. The increases in interest rates and resulting yields have created opportunities for savers and investors. Money markets now provide rates of about 5%; however, they are taxable and subject to re-investment risk. Currently, I am encouraging qualified individuals in higher tax brackets to consider using a barbell approach of short-term United States Treasury Bonds (UST) and Mid Term Municipal Bonds (Muni). Using the 1-year UST as a proxy, the yield is about 5.4%. USTs are highly liquid and are State tax exempt. On the back end of the barbell, Muni bonds can be both Federal and State tax-exempt. For example, using an effective yield of say 4%, assuming a combined tax rate of 50%, would result in a taxable equivalent yield of 8%. Duration would help manage reinvestment risk and potentially provide the opportunity for gain; in the event the Federal Reserve Bank was to eventually cut rates. Higher interest rates create the motivation to allocate a bit more of a diversified portfolio to cash and fixed income. Autos Have you tried to purchase or lease a new car recently only to receive sticker shock? Low inventory, increased prices, and higher finance rates have significantly increased the cost. When acquiring that new car, consider the increased equity in your existing vehicle, for trade-in or available fixed purchase option, if leased. Imagine helping save the planet and your wallet, via an electric vehicle (EV). Purchasers of a qualified EV are eligible for a Federal Tax Credit of up to $7,500 subject to income limitations. Further qualified EVs are exempt from NJ Sales Tax. Leasing an EV could be a smart choice in that some manufacturers will pass the federal credit, without regard to income limitations. Further, the price of EVs is expected to decline over time and the technology to advance, as such the ability to return the vehicle at lease end would be of value.
