OFF WITH THIS AD Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery in Bernardsville was founded almost twelve years ago as a place for New Jersey artists to exhibit and offer their work for sale. The gallery is the whole second floor, in a historic building in Bernardsville which was the dance hall in the 1870’s. That party atmosphere is still apparent at the First Friday BernARTsville Art Walk, Artist Receptions, held through- out the year. For anyone wishing to learn to appreciate original art, it is an excellent place to start. Director Kathleen Palmer will guide you through the process of understanding the various mediums from oil paintings to blown glass. Art makes a home your own, whether it is a piece acquired while on vacation or a carefully chosen painting that you love and want to live with. Learning to love and buy art is a journey. It is not some- thing to rush into. Learn about the styles, materials and subjects. Explore the mood and season depicted. Each one tells a story. Choose a painting that enhances that feel- ing that you want to come home to each day. Whether it be colorful and upbeat, gaudy and humorous, peaceful and serene or reminiscent of that special place you love to go, art can calm a hectic day, and reward you with pleasure for generations to come. There are many places in the area where you can experience art, in many forms, as you learn what speaks to you. The Mont- clair Art Museum is currently featuring American Visions, 1870-1940: works from the Bank of America Collection through June 19. The Hiram Blauvelt Art Museum in Oradel, known for its wonderful wildlife art is featuring Andrew Denman through April 30. In 2017, James Fiorentino, a Studio 7 sports and wildlife artist, will have his New Jersey Endangered Species show at the State Museum,and then it will travel to Studio 7 and the Blauvelt. On the campus of Princeton University, the Princeton Art Museum is featuring By Dawns Early Light: Jewish Contributions to Americas Culture through June 12. The Morris Museum, in Morristown, is currently featuring a Retro- spective on the abstract paintings of W. Carl Burger, a Studio 7 artist. They also have the Guinness Collection of Mechani- cal Musical Instruments, that amaze and delight both adults and children. For a hands-on experience, when you are at the shore, check out Hot Sand in Asbury Park. Studio 7 glass artist, Nicolas Emeric, blows glass there and can help you make a piece of your own. This is great for kids on a rainy day at the beach. In South Jersey, we are fortunate to have the Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center in Millville, where you can see potters and glass blowers and try your hand at both. They have festivals throughout the year and offer a family pic- nic area. Of course you are only a little over an hour away, by train, from one of the greatest art cities in the world, New York City, where you can experience every kind of art. Visit the museums: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim, The New Museum, to name a few, numerous Annual Art Fairs and don’t forget the Salmagundi Club, the oldest art club in the US. Studio 7 artists Stephanie Amato, James Fiorentino and Robert Pillsbury, the president of the club, continue to receive awards for their work there. After you have explored all these venues, close to home, you will develop a sense of what you like and why. Revisit Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery confident that you have made the journey and now appreciate the value of a good quality painting or unique piece of glass that you can own while sup- porting a local artist.
