WHAT ARE YOU
HOLDING ON TO?
By: Patricia Diesel, CPC
We all have things we’ve col-
lected over the years. Maybe
it’s dad’s golf clubs, great aunt
Sophie’s dishes, or mementos
from college. The problem is
that most of us hold onto
these “things” but we never
use them. So we have to ask
ourselves, “Why Am I Keep-
ing All This Stuff?”
One of the biggest challenges
people face who want to sim-
plify is how to let go of their
stuff. It can feel overwhelm-
ing trying to make the deci-
sion of what to keep and
what to release, especially
when it holds sentimental
value. Fear also plays a huge
role that keeps us holding on
too tight. But holding on to
unnecessary things also holds
us back.
Many of us are fearful of let-
ting go of our stuff because:
• It’s a way to stay close to
someone we loved.
• It’s a way to keep reliving a
happy memory.
• We think our kids will want
our stuff someday.
• We think we may need it
one day.
This mindset keeps us trapped
in an endless loop of uncer-
tainty and perhaps even hold-
ing on tighter than before.
This ultimately takes an emo-
tional toll and drags out the
process of simplifying. The
logical part of us says, ‘just let
it go’ but when emotions
come into play, it stirs all kinds
of doubt in us.
So what’s the solution?
Mustering up the courage to
take the first step – whatever
that may be. That initial step
can be very powerful. After
the first step is taken, the abil-
ity to identify what to keep or
let go of becomes much easi-
er and the fear now becomes
manageable.
Then ask yourself, “What do
you really want out of life and
why?” This helps you get
clear and see what’s really
important in your life rather
than focusing on your
“stuff.” With each step after
that, you will soon realize
that letting go represents
freedom and the ability to
move forward in life.
