WITH THIS AD Studio 7 Fine Art Gallery in Bernardsville was founded almost twelve years ago as a place for New Jersey artists to exhibit and sell their work. Over the years it expanded from watercolor, pastel and oil paintings into offering art glass, bronze and glass together, bronze sculptures, painted glass lighting and Murano glass jewelry. It repre- sents over thirty artists, still true to its mis- sion, mostly from New Jersey. The gallery is 2500 square feet, the whole second floor, in a historic building in Bernardsville which was the dance hall in the 1970’s. That party atmosphere is still apparent at the First Friday Artist Receptions, held throughout the year. The gallery owner, Kathleen Palmer, is an enthusiastic resource for anything art relat- ed. The following is her list of tips on caring for the art in your home or office. 1. Examine your art periodically. Look for signs of deterioration or damage. The presence of acid based framing prod- ucts, mat board with brown edges, and paper backing, used on watercolors or pastels, will fade any painting, or pre- cious document, on paper over time. Check the hardware and wires too. 2. Paintings on stretched canvas can buck- le, and become wavy, and wear at the corners. Tiny holes in the stretcher bars indicate that they are being eaten by boring insects. Loose paint can become cracked and fleck off. Cloudy looking oil paintings indicate that they have been kept in a humid environment, and hot dry conditions can dry out all mediums and the glue in frames. All paintings and documents should be kept in a temperate environment, in your home, office or house at the shore, if you want to preserve them. If you need to store your artwork, make sure the facility will be kept temperate at all times. Art on paper, documents and family photos should never be stored in plastic unless it is of archival quality. 3. Dusting paintings on canvas can be done with a clean dry cloth. When cleaning the glass on art, spray the cleaner on a paper towel, not on the framed piece. The liquid may seep in under the glass, and damage the art. 4. Avoid hanging paintings of any medium over a fireplace that is used regularly, near a heater or air conditioner, or in the kitchen or bathroom. The powder room is fine. Never hang a work on paper on a wall that will get direct sun during the day. And tobacco smoke is a killer, for paintings too. It fades and deteriorates paper, paint, ink and canvas. Taking care of works of art in glass is a whole different matter. The worst enemies of art glass are careless hired housekeepers or an acrobatic cat. Clean the glass yourself with an ammonia based product a few times a year. If possible keep it in an attrac- tive display cabinet which will only enhance its beauty and apparent value. Chipped or broken art glass can be repaired by a qual- ified restorer. If any of your treasures are experiencing any of these issues, contact the gallery for a referral to someone who can help you with them. If you take good care of them, they will be around for gen- erations to come. The February exhibit at Studio 7 will feature the oil paintings of Janet Cunniffe-Chieffo. She is known for her floral still life paintings on copper. The copper adds a glorious glow to her work. The exhibit runs from February 3-27, 2016 with an artist reception on the first Friday, February 5, 6-9pm. Whether it is a beautiful painting or a mag- ical piece of glass you “need” to brighten the long days of winter, Studio 7 can offer you more options than you knew existed in New Jersey.
