dashoveline1987 @ gmail.com Here are some tips for surviving, maybe even enjoying, your upcoming remodel. Hire a good designer/contractor. They will be part of your life for many weeks or months so, like any good partner, you should choose them care- fully. Definitely don’t hire a designer/ contractor just because they are the cheapest. Ask for references and choose a designer/contractor because they have good ideas, they listen to what you want and really understand what your goal is. Plan, plan, plan. Do not rush the planning and design phase of your project. This phase usually takes 3-6 months for a kitchen or bath remodel. Having all of your materials selected and ordered before construction begins and a detailed construction plan in place will minimize surprise costs/ change orders and will keep the proj- ect on schedule. Expect the unexpect- ed. No matter what, do plan for the project to cost more and take longer than expected. There will always be sur- prises that could not have been foreseen and upgrades/additions you will make that will add to the time and cost of the project. You want your project done right, so let the schedule be flexible, have some extra funds on hand and don’t plan a big holiday party or family gathering right after the target completion date, unless you want a nervous breakdown! Have a good attitude. It’s going to be stressful, dusty and chaotic but when it is done it will all be worth it. Having a good attitude and a sense of humor will go a long way. Your contrac- tor will enjoy being at your home and want to do good work for you if you are upbeat and have positive things to say about their work. Prepare your home. Prepare for a kitchen remodel by creating a temporary kitchen set up with a microwave, electric hot plate, refrigerator and a clean-up sink somewhere in the house. Organize and pack your items in well-marked boxes and stash out of the way of the con- struction area. Clean out your garage ahead of time and clear out at least one car space, your contractor will appreciate your garage to work and keep supplies, especially in the winter or during bad weather. Take a vacation. If you hired a good designer/contractor you should feel comfortable leaving town for a week or two while work gets done. Ask for updates and pictures each day via email to put your mind at ease and respond promptly to questions that come up so that they can keep your project moving. Taking a break from the chaos will give you the energy and patience to survive the rest of your remodel. It’s never too soon to start planning your new space so call TrueLeaf Kitchens at 908-766-2006 to set up an appointment today or visit their website www.trueleafkitchens.com.
