Barkai, who was born and raised in Israel, is an IT professional turned artist. She views herself as a “balanced left side/right side of the brain,” crediting her former career for her analytical and organizational skills and attention to detail. Barkai devotes her time now to art. Water- scapes, reflections and the changing sea- sons are favorite subjects in both her paint- ings and photographs. Barkai paints in dry pastels and oil and many of her recent paintings started on location (plein air), and further developed in her small home studio in Livingston. “My influences come from different parts of my life, complementing each other: a natural sense for design, an early child- hood by the sea and sun drenched fields of Israel, a move to the east coast of the USA, rich in waterscapes and seasonal changes, a long IT career that sharpened my analyt- ical skills, followed by a need and opportu- nity allowing me to awaken my visual self.” She adds “Beauty, aesthetics and harmony feed my inner search for serenity and peace.” Barkai is a signature member of the Pastel Society of New Jersey, of which she cur- rently serves as President. Her work was featured in Southwest Art Magazine, American Art Collector Magazine, Still Point Arts Quarterly and several others. Barkai’s photographs were included in sev- eral national juried exhibitions at the Salmagundi club in NYC, as was a recent painting of Glacier National Park. Barkai is also an avid dancer. Growing up in Israel she performed with the youth folk dance company of the city of Tel-Aviv. These days she spends many joyful evenings studying and practicing ballroom and Latin dancing. “It’s all art, keeping my body and soul in shape,” she says.
