ELLEN GANEK, M.D. PEDIATRIC HOUSECALLS 908.578.4653 ganekel@aol.com Dr. Ellen Ganek In 2010 pediatrician, Dr. Ellen Ganek found herself facing a med- ical challenge that was tougher than any she had faced in her pedi- atric career. This time it was a per- sonal challenge. Her third son was born with a rare life-threatening genetic disorder and it changed how she practiced medicine. When my son was just six days old, I was told by a specialist that his brain was normal but that if he got any of the common childhood illnesses he could suffer permanent neurologic injury. I was then told that he needed more bloodwork and that I must take him through a busy hospital, up three floors in a crowded elevator, and sit in a wait- ing room full of sick people. It didn’t seem right. That was just the beginning of our journey through the medical system where simple logic is often overlooked, where the needs of so many patients and families are not being met. After taking a leave to care for my son, I felt compelled to return to medicine in a more meaningful way. I have kept mental notes of all of the things that I felt I needed and did not have as the mother of a sick child. I have also kept mental notes of all of our positive experi- ences in the medical system. I com- piled all of these notes and started a boutique style pediatric house- calls practice designed specifically to fill the voids that exist in so many busy pediatric practices today. Whether you have a healthy child or a child with a medical con- dition, parenting is incredibly stressful. When I started my prac- tice I wanted to truly be available for my patients and to help mini- mize the stress and anxiety that so many parents experience. I could think of no better way to do this than to bring care to the patient in their own home where both par- ents and children feel most com- fortable. Bringing care to the home also eliminates long wait times and unnecessary germ exposure in the office. The average pediatric practice allots a mere 5-10 minutes for sick visits, and 15-30 minutes for well visits – resulting in a diminished quality of care. Maintaining a small practice size, focusing on acute care only, allows me to give each patient the best personalized care without being rushed. I value the relationship that I have developed with each patient and family in my practice. Having the opportunity to really get to know them enables me to make individualized man- agement decisions that are best for each child. Taking the time to thor- oughly explain diagnoses and treat- ment plans greatly improves out- comes. My patients also have direct access to me and can call me with any questions or concerns. It is a return to a simpler more logical approach to medicine. Today, my son is thriving and the experience has made me a better pediatrician. Dr. Ganek is a board certified pediatri- cian.
