And that the average force of the club head on the ball during impact is a staggering 2000 pounds of exer- tion? Or that in 1976, Arnold Palmer set a world record for flying around the world? If golf is your passion or part of your retirement dream life, you will surely want to visit the United States Golf Association (USGA) Museum, home to the world’s premier col- lection of golf memorabilia as well as the USGA Research and Test Center. The museum is located right in our backyard on Liberty Corner Road in Far Hills. The museum is divided into assorted galleries, all housed in the Arnold Palmer Center for Golf History, in order to optimize the visitor’s experience. The Hall of Champions explores the complete history of the USGA championship tournaments for men and women, pros and amateurs, and seniors. The permanent galleries feature six periods in which the most memo- rable moments in golf history are highlighted and chronicled. The periods featured are: The Dawn of American Golf (1894-1918), The Golden Age (1919-1930), The Depression/WW II (1931-1945), The Comeback Age (1946-1959), The Superpowers (1960-1989), and The Global Game (1990-present). Special galleries dedicated to the achievements of the golf leg- ends they are named for include: the Arnold Palmer Room, the Bob Jones Room, and the Ben Hogan Room. The museum boasts an exten- sive collection of artifacts from the early days of the game through the present, ranging from clubs, balls, and clothing, to trophies and medals, to books and works of art, all carefully and artfully displayed. In fact, more than 2,000 golf-relat- ed items are showcased here. Additionally, there are galleries dedicated to photography, video and film documenting the greatest champions of golf as well as the most unforgettable championship moments. The USGA provides sophisticat- ed conformance testing on golf clubs and balls as well as research into the newest technologies at the adjacent Research and Test Center. Guided tours, limited to 20 people at 1pm weekdays only, allow visitors a rare look into the biomechanics lab where the physics of the golf swing and golf ball impact are studied. Demonstrations include the COR test, the Indoor Test Range and Iron Byron. An outdoor driving range allows visitors to hit balls using both modern clubs and antique replicas of clubs used at the turn of the century. Due to the popularity of the tour, reservations are strongly recommended. To encourage families with bud- ding golfers, the museum has pre- pared a comprehensive Family Guide. Filled with a variety of activities and fun facts, young visi- tors are sure to appreciate their experience here. It’s never too early for their inner tiger (Woods, that is) to come out! Children 12 and under are admitted free of charge. The USGA Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 10am to 5pm. For further informa- tion, call 908-234-2300 or go to www.usgamuseum.com.
