THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION
APRIL/MAY 2017
Shake A Paw has been busy fighting the stigma of the deeply tarnished reputation of the term “pet store.” Accord- ing to the Pet Protection Act, which took effect a little over a year ago, it is illegal for NJ pet stores to purchase puppies from unlicensed, unregulated, large scale breeders, which are often referred to as “puppy mills.” Every single puppy that walks through our doors has to come from a USDA licensed breeder with zero direct viola- tions. When you take the previ- ously mentioned into account, this makes NJ pet stores the most regulated sources to pur- chase a puppy in the nation, and has fortunately led to the elimination of irresponsible pet stores. Unlike any other “pet store,” Shake A Paw also houses its own rescues inside of our two stores in Green Brook and Union. We have always wel- comed our own dogs back, but now we also take in overflow from high kill shelters and cus- tomer surrenders. Our rescue & adoption center is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organiza- tion, but most importantly we are a no-kill shelter. Our adop- tions typically vary in age from 8 weeks to 14 years, and they all have a home with us until they are adopted. As a team, we make sure all of our pups and dogs receive the best care. Family owned and operated for the past 25 years, Shake A Paw special- izes in protecting and preserv- ing the unique qualities of purebred dogs, as well as pro- viding shelter for surrendered and rescued pups. Whether it’s a non-shedding, kid-friendly purebred pup to accommodate a customer’s allergies and small children, or a family looking to give one of our adoptions a second chance, our unique facility presents customers with many different options of dog ownership.
