Lamington Corners 1260 Route 28 Branchburg 908-707-8400 By: Vince Damiano When one hears the words “Karate” or “Martial Arts” it paints a picture of students in rigid formations repeating robotic techniques to the demands of an instructor much like a drill ser- geant. After a visit to The Edge Center, located in Branchburg, that impression couldn’t be more opposite. “We teach our students using positive dialog and inspiring drills that they can put to use in their everyday lives,” says Vince Damiano, a head instructor at The Edge Center. The Edge Center is more of a personal development center than a Karate school. Focusing on community awareness, public speaking, dietary defense and even outdoor adven- ture; Martial Arts just happens to be a good medium to put all these skills together in one place. The Edge Center has a unique approach to its training classes. A typical class is filled with live action self-defense scenarios, inspirational team building activi- ties and a positive life learning message. “We use group building activities so children can work on their communication, conflict resolution and even their creativi- ty skills,” says Erik Barbolt, also known as “Mr. B,” a head instruc- tor at The Edge Center. During every class, students will have an opportunity to build valuable skills that will assist them in many aspects of life, from bullying to public speaking and decision making. Parents are encouraged to stay and watch the classes so that they can reinforce the lessons being taught. The Edge Center prides itself by teaching with an “open dialog” with the parents and stu- dents. This means that the coach- es can change and adapt what is being taught to address individual needs. “Our program is always evolving based on student and parent input,” explains Mr. Vince. “We are changing the way mar- tial arts is being taught, we don’t want to be the ego driven school of the past. Our mission is to be the living example to our stu- dents, to lead by inspiration and to raise each student up to a higher level achievement.” The Edge Center is currently working on a positive role model project called “mission driven leadership” to get young students into the world, to make a pro- found impact in their lives.
