Likely due to the distance from Warren to Princeton, I can count the number of times on one hand that we have run into people we know at Montgomery. About nine months ago we sat down in one of the five theatres at Montgomery and noticed fellow Warrenites, Cathy and Bob Rolland, across the aisle from us. I hadn’t seen Cathy and Bob in at least a year, perhaps two. The previews hadn’t started so we said hello. Bob told me that he looks for- ward to reading this column. Little did he know that he would be reading about himself in an upcom- ing edition. I asked Cathy if she was still work- ing for the Union for Reform Judaism, the organizing body for the Reform movement in greater North America. She said the organization was undergoing a lot of change but was still employed there and opti- mistic about the future. I asked if she had ever met my first cousin’s son, Danny Young, a rabbi in South Florida, in her travels around the country. There must be thousands of Reform rabbis in the United States and since he was not part of clergy serving a congrega- tion at that time, it was highly doubtful that their paths had crossed. As expected Cathy did not know Danny. As the lights began to dim for the film and promotions to get underway, Cathy went on to say that she was studying for a master’s degree at Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion and was excited that she would be spending time in Israel, as well as other cen- ters for Reform studies in the Unit- ed States, Cincinnati, Los Angeles and as you might expect, New York City. Within a couple weeks a picture was posted on Facebook of Cathy’s master’s degree class taken in Cincinnati. Front and center was one of the class instructors holding a Torah, the first 5 books of the Old Testament, flanked on one side by Cathy, the other side by my cousin Danny Young with the rest of their classmates surrounding them.
