Consider calling a house call pediatrician for your child. Dr. Edward Kulich from Celebrity Pediatrics now makes house calls in addition to seeing patients at his office in Watchung, NJ. In the old days, doctors made house calls. If you watch an old movie or even a cartoon such as Lady and the Tramp, the doctor is just a phone call away. With a simple phone call, your child’s pediatrician shows up at your door with his black bag to save the day. Insurance companies are fol- lowing suit and all major ones now cover the service. Why take a sick child outside when he is resting in his bed? There is no need. House calls are back and better than ever. Parents are thrilled with this relaxing experience of having a pediatrician in their home, all to themselves. They are able to ask any question, from sleep counseling to baby proofing tips. The doctor is in the child’s environment, and can really get to know your family. Parents are surprised to learn the capabilities of pediatric house call practices that pro- vide urgent care in a patient’s home. Rapid tests such as strep, flu and RSV tests are now readily available so that a pediatrician can make an accurate diagnosis on the spot. Some pediatricians elect to draw blood in the patient’s home and drop it off at the lab, avoiding long tedious trips to a lab with a scared child. Some even bring antibi- otics so you don't have to run to the pharmacy. A few pedi- atricians have elected to bring vaccinations to the home so that a “well child” checkup does not turn into a sick visit from germs caught in waiting rooms. When the doctor’s office is closed, parents search for a pediatric urgent care. Unfor- tunately, many urgent care centers do not staff pediatri- cians, relying instead on nurse practitioners, physician assis- tants, or adult doctors. Many parents have embraced the house call option now that it is available again. Most major cities have pediatric house call practices that pro- vide pediatric urgent care and primary care. Some use it as a supplement to their regular pediatrician when ill- ness strikes on an off hour or when their doctor is not avail- able. Some choose to make the house call pediatrician their child’s primary pediatri- cian, especially since all major insurance carriers now cover the service.
