NON-SURGICAL SOLUTIONS FOR
PERIPHERAL NERVE CONDITIONS
Submitted By: Peak Medical
Peripheral neuropathy is a condition that
can cause numbness, tingling or pain in
the arms and hands or legs and feet. The
disease directly affects the nerves in the
upper or lower extremities and can be
caused from a variety of circumstances
including diabetes, poor nutrition, chem-
icals including cancer drugs and alcohol.
A vast majority of patients with neuropa-
thy have no known cause and are diag-
nosed with idiopathic neuropathy.
If a doctor suspects you may have a form
of peripheral neuropathy, he or she may
refer you to a neurologist, a doctor who
specializes in diseases of the nerves. You
may need special testing to confirm that
you have peripheral neuropathy.
Fortunately, Peak Medical is pleased to be
able to offer some of the most advanced
diagnostic testing and treatments avail-
able for this disease. Peak Medical offers
several different modalities that can be
used together to alleviate the pain and
inflammation that commonly occurs with
peripheral neuropathy.
Non-invasive tests used to diagnose
peripheral neuropathy include Sudoscan
and Nerve Conduction Velocity (NCV)
test. These tests provide rapid informa-
tion to a trained medical staff, that can
then help to diagnose and prescribe
treatment solutions to deal with the
symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, and
where possible try to treat the underlying
causes.
Some of the effective, non-surgical, FDA
cleared treatments and therapies for
Peripheral Neuropathy include Neurolu-
men®, Deep Tissue Laser, acupuncture,
nutritional counseling, physical therapy,
and more.
Neurolumen® Therapy is one of the first
technologies to combine the benefits of
LED, Laser and electrostimualtion. It
combines the restorative properties of
light therapy with the therapeutic bene-
fits of electrical stimulation. This therapy
is designed to increase blood flow which
has shown to help alleviate pain and
reduce swelling associated with neuropa-
thy, diabetes, vascular disease, arthritis,
chemotherapy and injury.
Deep Tissue Laser Therapy is another
painless, non-invasive therapy offered at
Peak Medical. Deep Tissue Laser uses
laser light and offers the patient fast pain
relief and increased healing times. This
was approved by the FDA in 2006. Deep
Tissue Therapy is painless, non-invasive
and has no known side effects or risks.
The procedure is short, relaxing and pro-
duces a warm soothing sensation as it
stimulates tissue at the cellular level. This
works by affecting damaged cells with
laser energy. Cells that are damaged and
poorly oxygenated as a result of inflam-
mation, swelling or trauma have been
shown to have a significantly higher
response to laser therapy than normal
healthy cells. The immediate results of
this treatment are pain relief, inflamma-
tion reduction, accelerated tissue repair
and cell growth, improved blood flow,
improved nerve function and stimulation
of trigger points.
Another important therapy used in con-
junction with Neurolumen and Deep Tis-
sue Therapy is physical therapy. Super-
vised physical therapy can be very impor-
tant in any complete treatment approach
to peripheral neuropathy. Peak Medical’s
complete Physical Therapy team is highly
skilled and trained in physical therapy
that is specifically for treating peripheral
neuropathy.
Important goals for physical therapy
and/or exercise are to maintain muscle
strength, improve gait, balance, coordi-
nation and flexibility. Muscle weakness,
loss of coordination, dizziness, loss of
feeling in the feet and hands, all demand
the attention of an expert physical thera-
pist trained in treating various types of
neuropathy.
The staff at Peak Medical can also diag-
nose nutritional deficiencies and recom-
mend the proper supplements that you
may be lacking. Correcting nutrition can
actually improve neuropathy.
The best treatment for peripheral neu-
ropathy is a combination of several
modalities all of which are important to
obtain the best possible results. The
great advantage to receiving treatment
at Peak Medical is the fact that they offer
all these treatments at one location. The
kind, caring, knowledgeable and experi-
enced staff at Peak Medical are second
to none.
If you suffer from peripheral neuropathy
there really is only one choice for the best
care.
