New to the countrified Liberty Cor- ner area of Basking Ridge, Kathy is using her teaching skills to encour- age others to pursue their aspira- tions. Students from teens to adults with all levels of ability are wel- come to Melodia Studio. Kathy with her 20 plus years of teaching and performing experience can teach voice lessons, audition prepa- ration, language and repertoire coaching and the development of musical skills. In addition to teach- ing privately in her home in Basking Ridge, she is an Adjunct Professor of Voice at the Kean University Conservatory of Music in Union, N.J. Kathy has a gentle and kind demeanor which is so welcoming to students. When meeting Kathy one can immediately hear the enthusiasm in her speaking voice and see the expression on her face for what she was meant to pursue as her life’s work. Kathy knew from an early age that singing would be her pas- sion in life. She began piano les- sons when she was 8 years old and added singing lessons at age 16. She went on to study Voice Per- formance and Opera at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music and Yale University and her training cul- minated in four years of involve- ment in Young Artist Programs with the San Francisco Opera Com- pany. For the past twenty-five years Kathy has had a varied career at home and abroad. She has received critical acclaim in a variety of oper- atic and concert roles performing in operas such as Puccini’s Mimi and Madame Butterfly. Kathy is delighted to help her students by working together to explore their love of singing and fully develop potential of their nat- ural talent. According to Kathy, the “voice is an instrument” and she offers suggestions for “vocal health” and how to maintain the voice especially when performing. Whether you are pursuing a per- formance career or just enjoy singing, Kathy will be only too happy to welcome teens and adults to learn how to maximize their nat- ural singing abilities. She believes that the voice begins to mature in the teen years and voice lessons before this age can be harmful to the vocal chords. Kathy teaches classical music and believes this genre is the foundation for all music classifications and “can support other types of music learning.” Kathy is undeniably dedicated to her life’s passion and if you are lucky enough to work with her, she will guide you in pursuit of your goals no matter how large or small. Generally, it is expected that stu- dents will take lessons on a regular weekly basis.
