Kandou, D.D.S. www.warrennjdentist.com Now that School is coming back in to session, it is a good time to point out some interesting tips for opti- mum health and function. Summer is great in the sense that we get a break from the usual routine. Every- one gets to play in the sun and move away from the computers, gaming, phones, and sedentary lifestyle. This is true of both kids and adults. Having this break is important because it allows our bodies to be free of the confines of technology that make us keep our attention to just in front of us and not being able to move more freely. What I mean is that our necks and upper backs are fixed on whatever device (ipad, laptop, desk top, tv screen) is in front of us which can cause a number of maladies, including text neck, headaches, neck and back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and a number of other conditions. Going back to school brings back the routine of being in school, completeing homework, checking emails for communication between teachers and classmates and other parents, and reading for schoolwork and recreation. While back in this routine, there are a few tips to remember to reduce chances of injury. One tip for all the cell phone users out there is to bring the screen up your face instead of looking down at the phone. This will allow your neck to remain in an optimal position and puts less strain on the muscles of the back of your neck from holding the weight of your head forward. Not doing so can lead to frequent headaches and neck strains and poor posture. Another tip is to make sure that your computer screen is only 18 inches away from your eyes and the top of the moni- tor is eye level. This will prevent you from straining your eyes and/or your neck by having to adjust your head position so you can properly read and interact with the screen for longer periods of time. Another tip that may be helpful for all the kids with back packs out there is to make sure the straps are tightened for a snug fit while carry- ing all the books to and from school. Having a heavy back pack that is not properly fastened can lead to undue pressure on the shoulders and lower back by forc- ing them to work harder than they should to balance the load on the body while walking. Some sugges- tions can include a rolling back pack, an over the shoulder satchel, or requesting two sets of books, one for home and one for school. One last tip for that applies to all walks of life. MOVE. Your body is meant to move and your body will thank you for moving. Studies show that sitting for long periods of time is detrimental both physi- cally and mentally. Getting up after walking around after sitting for an hour or more will boost brain pro- ductivity and produce clarity espe- cially if you are stuck in a rut men- tally working on a problem. Some people might simply walk, some will do jumping jacks or squats, some might climb stairs but at least they are moving. So come on down to ProActiveCare and have a free screening and evaluation to see if there are any changes you can make to help you function optimally.
