If it’s not now, when would be the per- fect time? Old beliefs may convince you that you’ve missed the boat, your ship has sailed or you’re just too old to start something new. There are things that you want to do, but won’t do for fear of being judged by others. There are things that you want to do that you may have con- vinced yourself are just not possible. You are constantly reminded by friends, family and society that you should get real, play it safe, be sure before you start something new, fol- low the rules and regulations. The privilege of turning 57 this year has reminded me that my life is precious. A concept that can get lost in the daily grind of life. Sometimes we forget that our life is a gift to be cherished and enjoyed. We forget what we want and we forget that we can have it. Here’s a story that may seem unbeliev- able to you. It is a story that was unbe- lievable to me except that it really hap- pened to me. I hope that it will inspire you and be evidence that the Universe always has your back. All you need to do is get clear on what you want and ask for it. The story begins on my 19th birthday, with my dream to follow a career in fashion. With an acceptance letter to the Fashion Institute of Technology in one hand and a positive pregnancy test in the other, I made the decision to stay home to raise my son. The dream of FIT never really left me and I thought about it through the years. 34 years later as I was doing some self reflective work, the fashion dream came back to me. I wanted to do something with fashion and I lovingly asked myself the question, “How can I get into the fash- ion world now?” I admit that my head swirled with not so loving thoughts of how ridiculous that idea was. I thought about how impossible such an idea would be. I thought about how crazy it was to think that at this age with no formal fashion education, I could actually work in the fashion field; a field over- flowing with young talented people. I quieted those thoughts and just left the question alone. I stopped judging what could be possible and I let it go. A week later, the magic happened. I serendipitously met a New York fash- ion designer at a local NJ event. He was visiting with family and I was help- ing out a friend. Normally neither one of us would have been in that place, but there we were, on this one day, in the same exact location. The magic is that at that very moment he was in need of an assistant and I was in need of fulfilling my dream of entering the fashion world. I am now the assistant to a designer, with a highly experienced passionate man teaching me the things I’ve always wanted to learn. Added to that is the flexible part - time schedule that allows me to continue with my other passions. It’s a dream come true. And that is how the Universe provides for you. There is nothing that you can’t do at any age or stage of life. Simply knock on the door and a door will open. Ask the Universe for what you want and wait for your answer. There is no perfect time except for right now. If you have a dream, start now. Let go of the excuses and begin with gentle compassion towards yourself to believe that anything is possible. Ask- ing a few self discovery questions (see below) will help give you clarity on what you want. It will help you to see things in a different way and reveal your next step. Because it’s never too late to do what you’ve always dreamed of doing. And the perfect time is right now. What is one thing you always wanted to do but didn’t? Why do you want to do this thing? Why did you never do it? How important is it for you to do it? How would it feel if you were able to do it now? How would you feel if you never did it? What limiting idea would you have to let go of in order to move forward toward this thing that you want? Your time is now. Have fun with this.
