SYLVAN LEARNING CENTER 1962 Washington Valley Road Martinsville, NJ 08836 (732) 356-1970 By: Keli Gabinelli The Sylvan Learning Center in Martinsville, open for the past four- teen years, is under new ownership! Former research scientist of neuro- science and neuro-pharmacology for twenty-five years, Aniket Patel left the unstable pharmaceutical research industry in hopes to own his own business. As a father of two young children, Patel decided to immerse himself in the world of educational services. What attracted Patel to tak- ing over the Martinsville Sylvan Learning Center is the innovative and specialized academic care Syl- van brings to its students, offering programs for students who may be falling behind and for those who wish to get ahead of the grade. Sylvan’s educational services are available for students of all ages and institutions, ranging from classes designed to prepare students for the SAT or ACT, to proctoring college exams, to individual tutoring. From Pre-K through eighth grade, all of Sylvan’s services are engaged via iPad. This allows the students progress to be closely tracked to ensure they are meeting their highest potential. The student assessment test is designed to immediately target the areas of strength and weakness for each student’s portfo- lio. Sylvan makes a promise to par- ents and students that each student will receive an individualized and specific plan of action to strengthen their weaknesses and continue bol- stering their strengths. For all ages, there is a strict 3:1 maximum student to teacher ratio to ensure that every student is on track with the special- ized plan laid out by the Sylvan Assessment Test. For basic subject areas for stu- dents typically in the Pre-K through eighth grade range, like mathemat- ics, reading, or writing, Sylvan’s tutoring positions are only open to state-certified teachers. This allows Sylvan to maintain consistency with the statewide curriculum. For stu- dents in high school or above, engag- ing in more rigorous subjects, like the advanced sciences, Sylvan’s tutors must hold a nationally recognized university degree in that specific sub- ject. This ensures that someone with higher education and understanding of the subject can adequately convey concepts to the students. Patel also felt it was the right time to jump on board with Sylvan Learning Center, as it’s academic mission begins to channel digital interests and moves to embrace the STEM model, as evident with Syl- van’s increased iPad compatibility for students. Patel is eager and excited to introduce Sylvan’s new Edge pro- grams this month, launching a Lego- robotics class, digital code writing course, and a new mathematics enrichment program. As a new business owner, Patel’s mission for 2015 is to open satellite centers to cater to increasing amounts of students from the Far Hills, Bernardsville, and Watchung area. It is also his mission to build a solid reputation as a lender of aca- demic services, and continue to form valuable relationships within the community.
