Local artist Steve Zazenski ’s Winter Light graces the cover. Steve remarks, “I titled this painting Winter Light as that to me is the main focus and the thing most important to me. My usual inspiration when attempting a winter scene with snow is the wonderful interplay between the sunlit areas and the shadows that occur from trees and rocks etc. The shapes in the landscape also play their part in creating interesting combinations of light and shadow. This painting also benefits from the presence of the classic stone barn, which introduces some architectural elements that play off the natural forms in the landscape.” Check out his inspirational bio on page 8. We start by assessing what we can do to help our dogs understand us better. Sometimes frustration from both parties in the relationship stems from not speaking the same language… and it’s true because we don’t! As humans, we may find it difficult to get our dogs to understand us when we speak in a language that they do not. So, at My Dog’s Got Class, we try to help people learn how to speak the language of dogs. The most useful tool in dog training is something that every dog parent has in their toolbox; it’s our own bodies! Dogs learn and understand things more visually than auditorily; so when trying to get your dog to do something, we recommend thinking about what your body is saying first. In group classes at My Dog’s Got Class, when we teach something new to the dog, we always start off silently. We make sure that the dog understands our hand/body cues first before we add the verbal cue. In teaching ‘Down’, for example, we lure the dog into position nose to toes first, over and over. While doing this we make sure that our hand cue looks the same when there is a lure in it, and when there is not so when the time comes to remove the lure, our hand cue has not changed. Then, we practice many times without the lure to make sure the dog really understands that hand cue. Once the behavior is patterned with the hand cue, we can then add the verbal cue. The reason we wait to add the verbal cue is to ensure the dog completely understands the hand cue and then it can be paired with the auditorial cue. If the understanding of the hand cue is not present, the connection to the verbal cue cannot be made. Once the connection between visual and verbal is made, the next step would be to start removing the visual cue. If the connection does not happen, this is when we find ourselves repeating verbal cues and getting frustrated. We can simply remind the dog with our visual cue for success! Another way our bodies are a useful tool in training is for ‘Recalls’. As humans, it is a simple instinct to run after someone or something that we are trying to catch; however, dogs are very aware of spatial pressure. If we run after them in hopes of trying to catch them, we often find ourselves initiating a chasing game. This is because when we run after them, we increase our spatial pressure onto them. Instead, we should run the other way or shuffle backwards while facing them. This encourages them to follow us and come play our game instead. The backing up of our bodies decreases the pressure and actually makes them want to come towards us! Once they are on their way to us we can start getting our treats ready to reward them when they get to us. There are many other ways we use our bodies in training whether it be for visual cues or for spatial pressure. For ‘Stay’ we use a stop sign hand as a visual, for example, but for jumping we would use spatial pressure. Come to a group class to learn more tips on how you can use your body as a tool for training! Our current class schedule can be found on our website: www.mydogsgotclass.com If we run after them in hopes of trying to catch them, we often find ourselves initiating a chasing game. This is because when we run after them, we increase our spatial pressure onto them. Instead, we should run the other way or shuffle backwards while facing them. We make sure that the dog understands our hand/body cues first before we add the verbal cue. In teaching ‘Down’, for example, we lure the dog into position nose to toes first, over and over. THE BRIDGEWATER-SOMERVILLE CONNECTION PAGE 13 FEB/MARCH 2022 theconnectionsnj.com There is great demand in the health care industry for professionals dedicated to helping those with mental illness. A new scholarship program for those pursuing a degree in the mental health profession, and for those coping with mental health issues who want to pursue higher education has been initiated by New Jersey psychiatrist, Dr. Steven R. Budoff. The Steven R. Budoff Mental Health Educational Scholarship Fund aims to address the shortage of professionals given by the increased demand. The mission is to provide scholarships to individuals who are pursuing education in the mental health field to assist them in reaching their career goals. The intention is to increase the number of mental health professionals who will serve their communities and offer quality mental health support to those in need. Dr. Steven Budoff is a well-respected psychiatrist serving patients throughout the tri-State area for the past three decades. His own practice, Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Solutions, is located in Raritan but he also works in private practices in Summit and East Brunswick and in community agencies and programs in Bound Brook, Flemington and Bordentown. Dr. Budoff is dedicated to expanding educational opportunities and resources in his home state of New Jersey. Chabad of Hunterdon County will administer the scholarship, something its Director Rabbi Eli Kornfeld thinks “fits into our overarching goal and mission.” Chabad’s humanitarian mission seeks to have a social impact. That can be a challenge, Kornfeld notes, because often there’s a gap between a good idea, kindness and good intentions and actual action that produces results. The Steven R. Budoff Mental Health Educational Scholarship Fund is non-denominational and is open to all. Its first scholarships will be awarded this year. Corporate grants and private donations are welcome. For additional information, visit the website: MentalHealthNJ.org Psychiatry and Behavioral Health Solutions THE STEVEN R. During sleep our bodies restore and repair and our brain forms new neuronal connections building upon our memory matrix. Ongoing disruption in our sleep duration and quality leads to slow erosion of health in the long term. Among many reasons for sleep disturbances, snoring or sleep apnea is by far the most common and most impactful one. Sleep apnea is a series of repetitive, temporary interruptions in breathing while asleep and is one of the first signs of airway collapse or obstruction, secondary to poor tongue posture or underdeveloped jaw. Apnea decreases the amount of oxygen delivered to your vital organs such as heart and brain. The consequences can be severe and affect your entire body. The health burden of sleep apnea is high in all areas of medicine and it is associated with an increased risk of all-cause mortality and morbidity if left unmanaged. Brain scans of patients with sleep apnea show that our brain suffers damage during apneic episodes. Specifically, the regions of our brain responsible for control of breathing, blood pressure, motor coordination, memory and attention are involved. These areas are also damaged in chronic diseases such as dementia, heart disease and ADHD among many others. Considered a condition of the older population, in recent years sleep apnea is frequently evaluated in children with enormous impact on their development and ability to learn. For example, around 25% of all children experience some type of sleep problem and sleep complaints in children with ADHD have been reported in 55% of the cases. This could be one of the many underlying factors for chronic disease in our youth. The causes of sleep apnea in children and adults are numerous and include vitamin and nutrient deficiencies during pregnancy and early development, lack of breastfeeding, and a diet deficient in fibrous foods that require chewing to strengthen the masticating muscles. Specifically, vitamin D deficiency has been linked with an underdeveloped jaw and airway muscle weakness in children. Breastfeeding provides an opportunity for the baby to widen their palate and strengthen their tongue reducing the risk of airway obstruction and strengthens the tongue muscles. Obesity and inflammation are two other contributing factors. Functional treatments for sleep apnea along with biometric oral appliances are effective at correcting this problem and take a multi modal approach. They include strengthening the muscles that support the airway, postural reeducation to promote proper airway alignment with physical therapy, breathing reeducation with biofeedback therapy, exercising the tongue and jaw muscle by eating whole, fibrous foods that require chewing, eating a diet that provides nutrient dense foods and exercising consistently to support oxygen delivery to the brain. At NMR we understand the severe health consequences of sleep apnea and provide solutions in a team-oriented manner. Our team includes disciplines such as physical therapy, chiropractic care-particularly of the upper cervical region, functional medicine, biofeedback and holistic dentistry with a novel and innovative approach to airway management. theconnectionsnj.com HEALTH & WELLNESS PAGE 22 Medicare Solutions Medicare Plans from DĂƌŐŽƚ͛Ɛ DĞĚŝĐĂƌĞ ^ŽůƵƟŽŶƐ Those of you who have been reading this column for many years know that I often speculate about the probability of connections. Sometimes I put forth some amateur statistical analysis. In the last issue, I estimated that only one percent of business cards have rounded corners. I received two on the same day. You may remember that I recently wrote about a business survey I completed with the identical answers to one completed by one of the people that worked for me. I estimated that to have a 1 in 268 million chance of occurrence. You may also remember a column about the Mets winning a home game on September 11th by scoring 9 runs on 11 hits. In that column, I also detailed the only known professional baseball game, out of hundreds of thousands, where both teams scored runs in every inning. My sister, Susie, is also fascinated by numbers and patterns. Due to the COVID pandemic, I hadn’t seen her and her family in almost two years. A week before Thanksgiving, Susie, along with her husband and son, visited Philadelphia to attend her daughter’s PhD dissertation defense. My wife and I drove to Philadelphia a couple days later for a celebratory family lunch. While we were together, she relayed a crazy story to me involving numbers. Over a decade ago, Susie worked as representative for a jewelry company that marketed and sold its products through home shopping parties. These events take a substantial amount of effort to plan and execute, as they involve working with a person who is willing to host a party in her (or his) house. Susie had organized a party for November 11, 2011. There didn’t seem to be anything out of the ordinary as she conducted the event. It was well attended and hectic, as usual. As soon as it concluded, Susie packed up her samples and left the hostess’s house. That evening, she began entering her data into the company’s system starting with the date of the party, which she entered as “111111.” When she had completed entry of the individual orders from the party, sales tax was applied. Her grand total was 1111.11 dollars. Susie double checked her work, amazed that both the date and her total sales were recorded with six 1s! While Susie’s coincidence isn’t particularly profound in my view, her observation and reaction would not have happened without: (1) Pope Gregory XIII’s reformation of the Julian calendar, in 1582, which took an additional hundred and seventy-five years for the entire world to adopt; (2) the notation of the date that is commonly used today, where only the first two digits of the year are written (in this case, 11/11/11, rather than 11/11/2011); and (3) the US dollar, created in 1792 (Susie’s total for this event wouldn’t have been all 1s had she transacted in another currency, for example, 715.67 pounds or 857.89 Euros). I find these improbable connections fascinating. What are the odds that at a party held on November 11, 2001 there would be exactly $1111.11 in sales? If you spot any improbable connections, let me know. I would welcome the opportunity to add your story to my column. CONNECTIONS BY THE NUMBERS By Dan Rosenberg What are the odds that at a party held on November 11, 2001 there would be exactly $1111.11 in sales? Susie had organized a party for November 11, 2011. ONE MONTH TRIAL $99.99 Includes a FREE Uniform Do you see yourself as a successful person? Regardless of how you define what your personal success is, have you arrived or are you still evolving? In the early 1970s, William Glasser, MD coined the term, “success identity.” Your success identity is how you see yourself. It is a relationship with yourself that is the culmination of your physical appearance, values, morals, personal attributes, social status, occupation, specific skills, and more. Your picture of yourself, or your schemata, may be very, very different than how others see you. I once worked with a successful Madison Ave. model that entered therapy because she felt guilty and ashamed that people would pay her $1000 an hour to take her picture because she did not see herself as pretty. Regardless of whether or not you see yourself as others do, if you perceive yourself as having a success identity, it can be one of the most important factors determining your actual success. A success identity consists of more than positive self-esteem. It is really the sum of all that you believe about yourself, the general outlook you have for yourself, and how you think about yourself. Someone with a success identity readily accepts new challenges because they see their potential to meet those challenges. They have an automatic, “I can do this” attitude. They have goals with plans to attain those goals. Success identity empowers a person to believe almost anything is possible. They are persistent because they believe there is always a way to solve problems or get what they want. Someone with a success identity sees the “up-side” of situations, and makes choices to seize opportunities. So, how do you see yourself? Do you embrace life and all that it brings with a basic belief that you can be who you want to be and get what you want out of it? Or, do you have a failure identity that is pessimistic and riddled with thoughts such as, “I can’t,” “I shouldn’t,” or “I will never be able to.” Thoughts like those can actually prevent you from succeeding. If you are now realizing that you automatically possess these negative beliefs about yourself and your life, then you need to start shifting to a success identity. Becoming aware of your negative, pessimistic thoughts is the first step. Next, you need to challenge these unhelpful beliefs and thoughts by questioning their validity or by inverting your thinking. In other words, “I can’t do this” is questioned by, “What is stopping me?” “I shouldn’t do that” is challenged by “Why not do it?” Deciding to take action in a positive way, fighting that maladaptive, self-defeating view of your identity will help create a success identity, and subsequently, success in your life. Remember-you can possess a success identity by changing your beliefs and perception of yourself. Believe you can do anything you put your mind to do, and put positive plans into action. Your success identity can create success in your life.
