THE BENEFITS OF DECLUTTERING By: Patricia Diesel, CPC It takes courage to simplify one’s life and be free of things you may have considered important or spe- cial at one time. Recognizing that your things may no longer be serv- ing you (and can actually be hold- ing you back from living life to the fullest) is a true sign of personal growth. There’s a lot to be said about a person who can relinquish the old and welcome the new – even if they aren’t sure what that may look like. Simplicity is a sign of growth because making the choice to “let go” allows you to move forward with life. This is a healthy decision. The process of letting go improves your overall wellness for your mind and living space. I see way too often people who struggle with the notion that “let- ting go” is somehow a sign of weakness. This can be to their detriment as it propels them into a chronic state of fear because they feel as if they are “losing” or “giv- ing up” something. But you see there is no loss with simplicity. Sim- plicity offers freedom of all that was but no longer is. So how can one lose when one becomes free? You simply cannot. The process of purging one’s life is powerful. A process fully embel- lished with tender moments of self- discovery. It’s as if you get to expe- rience your very own internal treas- ure hunt. Tell me, what’s more beautiful than that? Let’s take a look at 3 Good Reasons Why Decluttering Is Healthy For You: 1. You Can Decrease Stress; not having clutter around reduces your worry and anxiety. Next time you have unannounced guests, you don’t have to fret and scramble to hide things before letting them in. Just knowing your place is environ- mentally friendly is a load off the old noggin. 2. You Can Breathe Easier; regu- lar household dust is enough to deal with. But excessive clutter may contain mold, and other toxins that can complicate health issues further, especially if you have asthma or other breathing problems. 3. You Can Clear Your Mind; did you know that clutter can actu- ally interfere with your brain’s ability to process information. Think about it. Clutter is akin to chaos. Studies have proven that chaos restricts our ability to focus. When we are in a a clut- ter-free space we experience more energy and productivity. Commitment is the key to success- ful decluttering. A wise course of action is to determine wholeheart- edly at the outset to release things that no longer have a place in your life. It makes it easier to deal with the emotional side of the purging once this commitment has been made, because you are making the decision once and for all, rather than reassessing and deciding the fate of every object you touch. Similarly, commitment is needed to make the process a priority. This eliminates the reasons (excuses) why declutttering projects remain incomplete. To avoid this from hap- pening, schedule time in your cal- endar – just as if you were going to a very important meeting. Show up for yourself like you would for any other appointment.
