He was chatting with the call center agent while waiting for the computer system to respond. Turns out the agent had just been on a sales reward trip to Hawaii with my sister, in connection with a line of jewelry they both sold in their spare time. Recently Susie had another ran- dom connection involving our sister Lynn, who lives in Cincinnati. Many moons ago, Lynn and Susie attended a summer camp for girls in central Maine over several summers. They made lifelong friends at camp and were very excited about attend- ing the 100th anniversary reunion, which was held on the campus in Maine in July of 2015. Hundreds of former campers and counselors attended. Since Lynn and her husband had been visiting northern Michigan immediately before the reunion, Lynn had to make a flight connection, traveling from Pellston to Detroit and on to Portland. Susie, who was already in New England, had planned to pick Lynn up upon arrival, about noon. The first leg of Lynn’s trip was can- celed which resulted in a six hour delay to her arrival in Portland. Rather than just hang around the air- port, Susie decided to take a short drive to do some sightseeing on the beautiful Maine coast, maybe check- ing out an old lighthouse or two. People and tourists are friendly in Maine and Susie, like her older broth- er (me), is outgoing. So it was no sur- prise, when she told me she ended up talking with another woman, who was also taking in the scenery and nice weather. As Susie and her new acquain- tance were exchanging small talk about their lives and families, they queried each other on where they hailed from originally. A man, who was eavesdropping, interrupted them, turned to Susie and said, “Did I hear you say you were from Cincinnati? I am from Cincinnati.” This was not really a sur- prise to Susie as he was donning a Cincinnati Reds baseball cap. He was accompanied by his daughter, who was completing an 18 month educa- tional stint in Maine before her move to Alaska the next week. Cincinnati, which was settled in 1788, has a rich history of neighbor- hoods and areas. So again, no sur- prise that Susie and the Reds fans delved into what areas of town they lived in. At one point in the conver- sation Susie revealed that her sister Lynn had lived in the Mount Lookout neighborhood. He asked where. Susie responded with Lynn’s former street and location of the house. Surprise, the Reds fan was once Lynn’s next door neighbor. His daughter also realized that she used to come over to my sister’s from time to time to bake cookies with my nephew. SISTER ACT By: Dan Rosenberg www.theconnectionsnj.comPAGE 70
