Most people associate cataracts with aging; and though that’s the norm (by age 75, about 70 percent of peo- ple will have cataracts), the fact is cataracts can occur at any age. Jim Jenkins, a 45-year-old father of three from Hackettstown, noticed that the vision in his left eye was becoming increasingly blurry. He had a detached retina in the same eye 15 years ago, triggered by diabetes. “I couldn’t read unless I held some- thing directly to my face,” comment- ed Jim. “I had to give up coaching my sons’ Little League team. I couldn’t play ball with them and I could bare- ly see them on the track or field when they participated in sports. Although my right eye was compen- sating for my left, I was having trou- ble driving and performing routine tasks at work and home.” An eye specialist diagnosed Jim with a cataract in his left eye and directed him to Lawrence V. Najarian, M.D., Medical Director of Bedminster Eye and Laser Center. Dr. Najarian, one of the first eye surgeons in New Jersey to use Optiwave Refractive Analysis (ORA) to customize a patient’s vision during cataract surgery, was opti- mistic that Jim’s vision could be sig- nificantly improved. “It is important to understand a patient’s vision requirements before cataract surgery,” says Dr. Najarian. “Some people may have jobs or hob- bies that involve a lot of intense up- close work, whereas others may need to see distances more clearly.” The ORA intraoperative aberrometry system provides real-time analysis of the eye during surgery to ensure proper intraocular lens (IOL) power selection for optimal visual out- comes. For patients with astigma- tism, those who have had prior LASIK or PRK, or those who are having a multifocal lens implanted, ORA can improve the accuracy to help reduce the need of glasses after the proce- dure. According to Dr. Najarian, ORA in combination with the precision of femtosecond laser technology is making cataract surgery safer and more effective today. For Jim, the benefits of cataract sur- gery were crystal clear immediately following the outpatient procedure. “It was a life-changing experience,” remarks Jim. “I had the surgery on Friday, and on Sunday I saw my son run around a track for the first time. The procedure was quick and pain- less, and the office staff at Bedmin- ster Eye and Laser Center took extra care to make sure that my wife and young children were comfortable while they waited.” Now, back to coaching Little League, Jim admits that his cataract surgery was a real “home run”! Lawrence V. Najarian, M.D. is a board-certified ophthalmologist and founder of Bedminster Eye and Laser Center, P.A., which has served the Bed- minster community and beyond for more than 25 years. Dr. Najarian recently received a Gold Doc Award from the Arnold P. Gold Foundation. This national award is given to doctors who demonstrate “exemplary skill, sensitivity and compassion” toward patients. Dr. Najarian has been a faculty member of both New York Uni- versity (where he was recently honored with a volunteer service award) and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary for the past 25 years. Play Ball! Thanks to cataract surgery, Jim Jenkins is back to the Little League field with his sons [left to right] Tyler (7), Zach (5) and Ryan (8).
