A healthy, well functioning smile can provide an individual newfound confidence and self-esteem. Not to mention an attractive smile can make quite an important first impression. New and improved technology and techniques both enhance orthodontic treatment outcomes, while making the process more comfortable, more esthetic and faster than ever before. The technology behind clear aligner therapy has come a long way and now can tackle virtually every orthodontic challenge. Clear brackets continue to improve making the esthetics during treatment so much more acceptable. In recent years, more orthodontic research has focused on the science of tooth movement with new approaches that heighten the patient’s own biolog- ical response to orthodontic forces. There are now several non-invasive options available to patients as an adjunct to their orthodontic treatment. These accelerating devices can also be used with any orthodontic appliance to both decrease overall treatment time and increase patient comfort through- out the duration of treatment. Children and Interceptive Orthodontics Parents often come into my office and ask why their children’s friends at such a “young” age, are already starting orthodontic treatment. Unfortunately, the simple answer is not so simple because every patient is different and has a unique set of orthodontic prob- lems. With this in mind, every treat- ment plan must also be unique and reflect the patient’s own individual needs. In years past, orthodontics was considered most appropriately timed during the teenage years. Unfortu- nately for some patients, starting treat- ment based upon a chronological age can result in more limited treatment options and compromises. It can actu- ally result in longer active treatments compared to treatment that may have started at an earlier point in time. Some, but not all patients can benefit significantly from a two-phase ortho- dontic approach. Starting treatment as early as age 7, 8 or 9, an orthodontist can take advantage of growth and development to help create better overall treatment outcomes. When considering interceptive orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist is screen- ing for skeletal discrepancies between the upper and lower jaws as well as problems and difficulties in the erup- tion of the child’s permanent teeth. Improving the functional positions of the jaws and teeth at an early age can have multiple benefits. Early correction of skeletal discrepancies can greatly improve a child’s future growth and development. Early intervention can minimize the risk of unerupted perma- nent teeth. The extraction of perma- nent teeth can also be minimized when certain problems are identified and addressed in the earlier develop- mental years. The only real way to know when the right time to start orthodontic treat- ment is to visit an orthodontist. The American Academy of Orthodontics recommends a screening exam around age 7. At this stage, important growth and development disturbances can be evaluated. In some instances, early treatment may be recommended. In others, orthodontic treatment will not be needed and can be re-evaluated at a later time depending on the patient’s needs. The best advice is for a child to be evaluated at an early age so that ideal treatment can be delivered at the appropriate time.
