SWIM, Inc., “Specialized Water Inter- est Movement” is a volunteer organi- zation that provides recreational water therapy for adults with muscular impairment. There is need for volun- teers to help some of the SWIM par- ticipants who require assistance. Current swimmers have arthritis, multiple sclerosis, post-polio syn- drome, fibromyalgia, reduced muscle mass from battling cancer, and there are individuals recovering from strokes, heart attacks, hip or knee sur- gery, or injuries. Everyone is required to sign a release and a physician’s approval is required. All participants must wear a swim belt that is provid- ed. Transportation to and from the pool is the participant’s responsibility. SWIMMERS MAY APPLY NOW. Adults with physical impairments know how helpful it is to “exercise” and “get out of the house!” SWIM is a non-profit organization that provides FREE opportunities for adults with muscular impairments to exercise weekly in a pool in a positive, caring and safe environment. Water exercise may include floating, mild movement, walking in the water, doing aerobic movements or swimming pool lengths. Participants go at their own pace and choose what is best for them. There are 16 locations throughout NJ that offer this FREE program featuring hydraulic chair lifts, in some loca- tions, for those requiring assistance getting in and out of the water. Some chapters also have a voluntary social hour, an opportunity to talk, listen, laugh or share with other swimmers and volunteers. VOLUNTEERS MAY REGISTER NOW. How ideal it is for students studying physical therapy or caring adults available for a couple of hours a week who really want to make a dif- ference. Some spouses or caregivers sign up as volunteers. Both men and women volunteers are needed. Volun- teers assist in the water, the dressing room or serve refreshments. One swimmer remarked, “I’ve had multiple sclerosis for five years. Since I began swimming in this program, I realized how exercise helps my body and makes me feel better. It is not only the swimming…it’s the people who volunteer with us; I really look for- ward to SWIM each week. This is a group with good attitudes where peo- ple are doing something to help them- selves. The exercise rejuvenates my body and the people are some of the friendliest you will ever meet.” IT IS EASY TO REGISTER. Visit the websit e www.swim-inc.org to download an application or call 908-766-6085, or contact the participating YMCA or community center nearest to you.
