In many ways it feels like a different world but like today there were people back then in need of help… people with not enough to eat, individuals feeling depressed or anxious and not coping well with life, seniors becoming frail and needing help for the first time in their lives, young families dealing with the stresses and strains of marriage or parent- ing, sometimes exacerbated by the special needs of a child, or worries about having enough money to live on, fears of losing a job and losing one’s health or grieving the loss of a loved one, the list goes on. The founders of this agency who made the decision to establish a Jewish Family Service to address these very concerns had the strength and energy to bring their plans to fruition. We opened our doors on May 6th, 1980 and haven’t looked back. Fast forward to today. The agency they helped to establish in 1980 is still going strong and still helping people throughout the life cycle. I hope the founders and all of the other sup- porters of JFS over the years are proud of our accomplishments. Since 1980 JFS has tried to live up to its mission “to strength individual, family and community life based on Jewish values”. We’ve provided mental health coun- seling to over 2,700 individuals and families struggling to cope with the stressors of every- day life, offered career services and job seeker support to 1000 individuals, helped to resettle 60 families from the form Soviet Union as well as families from Kosovo, provided 280 family mentors to young families in need of support as well as to frail isolated elderly, offer- ing companionship and support. We have also provided home care services and other support services to 50 Holocaust survivors and their families, and in 2001, JFS was one of the des- ignated mental health agencies to offer coun- seling and group support services to those most impacted by the events of 9/11. Each year JFS helps over 100 frail seniors to age in place in the dignity of their own home through the Senior Service Program and addresses hunger in the community by supply- ing emergency food assistance to over 50 fam- ilies struggling economically. 35 special needs families each year participate in programs designed to support them and help them cope with life’s stressors and 180 individuals resid- ing in the community but feeling isolated and alone in institutional settings are sustained by regular visits from the Community Chaplaincy offered through the Ohr Tikvah Jewish Healing program at JFS. And, most recently, in 2014 the Community Hebrew Free Loan program merged with JFS to continue the tradition of helping families become financially stable and self supporting by providing an interest free loan when no other options are available. Today JFS is thriving. It thrives because it has to, the community needs us to. But regardless of the urgent need for our services, JFS would cease to exist without the continued support of our donors, volunteers and community leaders.
