It has been referred to as the “secret of life,” “the key that opens all doors” and “the queen of virtues.” With these powerful descriptors, it’s no wonder that gratitude has become all the “new age” rage. It’s the “next spiritual” thing to add to your spiritual to-do list. The “for- ward step” that you need to work on to get the full benefits of a great life. The benefits of practicing gratitude are monumental in enhancing overall health. Gratitude will increase your emotional wellbeing, help you get along better with others, reduce depression, increase your generosity, help you be more forgiving and more resilient. It sounds like a super power drug minus the negative side effects. As if that wasn’t enough, there are even physical benefits to strengthen- ing your gratitude muscle. You will exer- cise better, sleep better, be more active, be less likely to engage in unhealthy behaviors of eating, drinking, smoking. DO I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION YET? If you want to know how to do this, keep read- ing and you may find here the very thing that can change your life for the better. Forever. No matter what messy crazy stuff is going on in it. Let’s first get on what clear gratitude isn’t, so we can know what it is. Gratitude isn’t positively thinking about things or deny- ing that suffering exists. It’s not a chore to be added to a list of things to do or some- thing you need to create more time for. Gratitude is a state of BEING. It’s how you see the world. It’s a different view, an altered state, a fresh new look at things. It’s an energy that flows through you and the way you live in this world. Okay, here is where you ask me, “WHAT!? How the heck do I get that energy flow- ing thru me?” The answer is very simple. But first you have to be willing to commit to making it a part of your daily experience and some- thing that you take everywhere with you. The big question… how do you do it? The big answer… just do it and start now. I offer you a few fun tips and ideas for jumping into gratitude. Pick the one that feels right to you and keep doing it… and don’t stop. Keep doing it until it becomes part of your new thinking but you don’t really have to think about it. None of these suggestions are difficult. None of them take more than a minute of time. Try any or all, then choosing your favorite, consistently incorporate the technique into every day, moving to multiple times a day when you are ready. 1. Rocks - (a reminder in your pocket, like a pebble in your shoe) keep this rock in your pocket and every time you feel it, change your focus to something you are grateful for. Hold that thought for 30 seconds. 2. Grace - before every meal, stop and say thank you. First for your food and then anything and everything else. Take 60 seconds for a verbal list. 3. Journal - a journal by your bed where you will write 3 things you are grateful for before going to bed at nite and as soon as your eyes open in the morning. Take 30 seconds for the list. 4. Jar - every nite before bed write your gratitudes for the day on little square of paper, place it into the jar. At the end of a year, your jar is full of grati- tude and you can take a look back at a long long list, raising your feelings even higher. 5. A Moment in Time - every time you see a self-designated number or color, stop what you are doing. Take 10 sec- onds and recite to yourself a short list of thank you’s. Before you know it, you won’t be practic- ing, you will BE gratitude. You won’t be able to stop (not that you would want to). It will consume you and draw you in. Gratitude is a feeling that washes over the entire you. It’s like a golden magnetic force field that protects and attracts more yummy things. You won’t know how to live without it. You’ll BEcome a walking essence of gratitude, exuding a thankful state that will enhance and enrich every area of your life. You will be contagious and infect others with your gratitude and grace. This is your invitation. Will you join me on your own personal grati- tude journey to create a happier and healthier life?
