Integrated Health and Fitness Need another excuse to get a mas- sage? A good massage just may help you live longer. A study pub- lished in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine sug- gests that people who received a single deep-tissue massage saw, on average, a seven-point decrease in both their systolic and diastolic blood pressures and a decrease in their resting heart rates by 11 beats per minute. “Over time, these sub- tractions could add as many as six years to a person’s life span,” says author of the study, Alan Kaye, M.D., Ph.D. “The benefits of mas- sage actually last for days, and the more you experience them, the more likely your body is to adjust permanently.” Another study published in Science Translational Medicine explains an experiment requiring individuals to exercise to exhaustion and then undergo five incisions in their legs in order to obtain muscle tissue for analysis. The experiment included rest, exercise, and massage. Researchers found that massage reduces the production of com- pounds called cytokines, which play a critical role in inflammation. Mas- sage also stimulates mitochondria, the tiny powerhouses inside cells that convert glucose into the ener- gy essential for cell function and repair. Dr. Tarnopolsky, a professor of pediatrics and medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, stated that massage works quite differently than anti-inflam- matory drugs which reduce inflam- mation and pain but could retard the healing process. He says mas- sage can suppress inflammation and actually enhance cell recovery. The health benefits of massage don’t stop there. The massage ther- apists at Providence! Integrated Health and Fitness are trained and certified in the medical applica- tion of massage. If you are recover- ing from an injury, for example, our therapists can support your body’s healing process by decreasing any discomfort you may be experienc- ing, and increasing your range of motion. Our therapists are also certified to administer massages to those who are in treatment for, or recovering from, cancer. Massage can compli- ment traditional cancer treatments; decrease stress and discomfort associated with those treatments, and simply provide a relaxing respite for cancer patients and their caregivers. Still on the fence about getting a massage? Then Providence! Integrated Health and Fitness wants to add a little extra incentive by offering everyone a $20 discount on their first visit for any massage through the end of February 2016!
