Q&A WITH HEALTH AND NUTRITION EXPERT By: Stephanie Solaris Question: I’m excited for Spring and Detoxing. I’m great for 8 or 10 days but then life takes over. I'm always on the go! Whether it’s doing errands, school activity pick-ups, traveling in airports or down to the shore. How do I eat well on the go and maintain my new healthy body composition? Answer: Our SWH Spring Detox client suc- cess is amazing! AND when life takes over (and we all know it does) we do see blips, or what I call scallops, in body composition, and that’s when our counseling comes into play. Daily scale weight fluctuations can feel defeating. It’s easy to mistake scale weight fluctuations as fat when it may be bloating or muscle gain. At SWH we use a high sen- sitivity Bio-Electrical Impedance Analyzer to navigate these blips during cleansing so you know exactly what you’ve gained and why, leading to better and different choic- es on the go! I travel quite a bit for my work and person- al life. The choices we all have, whether you stop for gas OR are in an airport, have improved tremendously in the last decade! However, the temptation as well as the change-up of schedules can throw anyone off their spring cleansing game! 3 Common “On-The-Go” Pitfalls and How to Overcome Them! 1. Time Crunch - We often pack our schedules so tightly that by the end of the day we are tired both physically, mentally and emotionally; 2. Skipping Meals - can cause fat to be stored due to a fight/flight reaction of not eating, high sugar cravings for energy, and sometimes bloating and heartburn due to eating too fast because you’re so hungry. 3. Random Nibbling & Unhealthy Choices - Those vibrant colored boxes and promises of 5-minute energy can be very tempting during a marathon type of day. As they say, “the hardest thing to resist is temptation.” The SWH 5+ “P” SYSTEM TO OVER- COME On-The-Go Pitfalls I was recently traveling home to New Jersey from a business trip in Florida, and knew there was bad weather on the horizon. I sat back and ran through my SWH 5+ “P’s”. 1. PURPOSE/INTENTION - to travel safely, look great and feel healthy, keep my body and skin hydrated, and arrive with energy to go grocery shopping for the rest of the week. 2. PLAN - I woke up 15 minutes early to plan where I was going to eat, what I was going to eat and what time I was going to eat. I also planned to pick up dinner on my way home from the airport to decrease my stress of arriving home late and being too hungry. 3. PREPARE - (a) I packed 2 SWH nutrition shakes, an organic orange, green tea and Organo coffee bags. (b) I had breakfast at 7am AND at 10:30 I ate a healthy lunch. I knew rearranging my meals was my best plan for success. (c) After airport security I bought 2, 1.5L bottles of water to make sure I kept hydrated during the flight. THEN LIFE TOOK OVER: It was snowing. After 3 landing attempts at Newark Airport our plane was rerouted to Albany. We dis- embarked there at 9:30pm (5 hours after our ETA at Newark). 4. PERSERVERE - There were MANY unhealthy options. I persevered, remem- bering my purpose and intention and how good I felt. I was proud to make great choices versus those around me with my snacks and water readily at hand. I made sure I fed myself every 3 hours. I was tired, but calm. 5. PATIENCE - I observed those around me consuming cookies, chips, soda, or solely surviving on coffee and/or libations. They were more tired, crankier and less able to deal effectively and clearly in the stressful situation. Some were passed out and exhausted, others were irritated and either demanding or complaining. I was glad to have my healthy snack goodie bag. Needless to say, by 3am (16 hours after I started) I was home, showered and in bed. 5+. PRAYER/GRATITUDE - I was grateful for being safe, home, and in bed. For hav- ing healthy snacks so I felt nourished, fed and prepared. I was grateful for feeling energetic and able to cope in a healthy, rational way, given the stressful circum- stances. I was also grateful I chose to reschedule my Monday morning to give my body the rest it needed. And I’m grateful that I work with people who had my back.
