This November, the town welcomes Chill Cryotherapy, the first whole body cryotherapy center in Central New Jersey. Originated in Japan in the early 1970s, cryotherapy is the secret behind Demi Moore’s age-defying appearance and LeBron James’ superhuman athletic feats. It also helps those suffering from chronic pain and relieves symptoms of many diseases and health conditions with an inflammato- ry component. Intrigued, we sat down with Chill Cryotherapy founder Julie Shane- brook to learn more: What is cryotherapy? Cryotherapy is the brief application of extremely cold temperature to the skin. How does it work? Exposure to extremely cold tempera- tures for a maximum of 3 minutes tricks your body into thinking it’s going into hypothermia. This triggers the “fight or flight” response as your brain maximizes your chances for survival: your metabolism is increased to produce more energy, your cognitive function is heightened and any inflammation and pain are reduced body- wide. These responses translate into weight loss, increased athletic performance, reduced pain and inflammation, better skin tone and overall wellness. What is a typical Chill Therapy session like? After a blood pressure check, new clients step into a private changing area to remove their clothes and jewelry. (Men are required to leave their undergarments on) They then stand in the cryosauna, a large stand-up booth which fills with ambient air that was chilled with liquid nitrogen. Tem- peratures in the cryosauna range from -220F to -260F. The client’s head remains outside of the machine, so claustrophobia is not an issue. For local areas of pain and inflamma- tion, we target extremely cold air vapor to the affected area for 4 to 6 minutes. This is also how we provide CryoFacials – a treat- ment for improving skin tone, circulation and reducing the signs of aging. How does cryotherapy impact weight loss? It increases your metabolism and burns between 500 to 800 calories per session. When the “fight of flight” response kicks in, blood rushes to the body’s core to pro- tect vital organs, jumpstarting your metab- olism and enriching blood with oxygen and nutrients. How does it help athletic performance? Cryotherapy boosts energy and reduces pain and inflammation, a surefire way to perform better. And after you’ve killed that marathon or triathalon, cryotherapy reduces recovery time and accelerates healing. Kobe and LeBron swear by it and many professional sports teams – the Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns and New Orleans Saints – have cryotherapy machines in their training facilities. What about pain management? Cryotherapy wages a multi-pronged attack on pain. First, the “fight or flight” response releases anti-inflammatory, pain- relieving endorphins into your system. Next, it supercharges blood with oxygen and nutrients – as this blood re-circulates throughout the body, pain and inflamma- tion are reduced. Finally, the cold tempera- ture creates “dermatomal confusion,” when the cold sensation travels faster to the brain than the sensation of pain, effec- tively “closing the gate” before pain reach- es the brain. With consistent cryotherapy sessions, specific pain pathways can become permanently closed. And beauty/anti-aging too? Cryotherapy activates collagen produc- tion, which has many benefits for fighting the aging process. You can reduce fine lines, wrinkles and acne. It can even reduce fat deposits and cellulite. How much would these services cost? Intro rate: $40 Single treatment: $75 Package of 10: $500 Single Cryofacial: $45 Local Treatment: $40 Clients can book through Chill Cryotherapy’s website www.chillcryo.net or call for an appointment. Walk-ins can be accommodated. Each appointment takes roughly 15 minutes – a hyper efficient use of your time as it burns oodles of calories.
