It’s quite challenging to find a family vacation destination that fits everyone’s needs all year round. The Berkshires, a cluster of quaint towns in western Massachusetts, offers beautiful scenery, unlimited outdoor recreation, renowned arts and cul- ture, a wide range of accommoda- tions, and good food every season of the year. Charming, historic towns, such as Lenox, Great Barrington, Stockbridge and Williamstown, cap- ture the New England spirit but cater to the needs and desires of today’s families. It’s only a few hours’ drive to this idyllic part of New England where you will be completely charmed by the area’s beauty, culture and wealth of outdoor activities. In the winter, skiing (downhill and cross country), snowmobiling and snowshoeing are the main attrac- tions. Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Catamount Ski Area, Berkshire East Ski Area in Charlemont and Bosquet Ski Resort in Pittsfield all have a vari- ety of terrain, including large begin- ner areas. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing can be found at Hilltop Orchards and Winery, The Cranwell Spa and Golf Resort in Lenox, and the Canterbury Farm in Becket. Spring and summer activities are endless in the Berkshires, and the spectacular foliage in September and early October naturally draws large crowds to the area. Hiking, biking, fishing, adventure sports, rafting, boating, horseback riding, and golf are some of the most popular activi- ties that are available. It’s a hikers’ paradise, whether conquering the 90 miles of Appalachian Trail, the top of Mt. Greylock or Wahconah Falls. There are a multitude of lakes and rivers, and I would recommend canoeing and kayaking along the Housatonic River or whitewater raft- ing along the dam-controlled Deerfield River in Charlemont. There are several adventure parks in the area, such as Catamount Aerial Adventure Park, Berkshire East Mountain Resort, and Zoar Outdoors, featuring zip lining and canopy tours, mountain biking and other mountain adventure activities that will appeal to children, teens and families. For young children, Uncle Dan’s Barnyard at Ioka Valley Farm offers the opportunity to touch and feed farm animals. Arts and culture are everywhere in the Berkshires. Museums, historic sites, gardens, galleries, and craft fairs are year-round attractions. Some of the highlights are: Animagic, a museum of animation and special effects; Arrowhead, the home of Herman Melville; the Clark Art Institute, containing an excep- tional collection of American, British and Old Master paintings; the Crane Museum of Papermaking; The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art; Hancock Shaker Village; Historic Deerfield; Mass MOCA, America’s largest center for contemporary and visual arts; The Norman Rockwell Museum; and The Mount, the home of Edith Wharton. Music, dance and theater come alive in the Berkshires, most notably Tanglewood, the home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and host to classical, pop and jazz musicians, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, and the Williamstown Theater Festival. If shopping is your thing, you have come to the right place! Outlet malls and stores are a big draw for visitors looking for brand name apparel at bargain prices. Specialty shops, arti- san crafts, and antiques galore are nestled among cafes, ice cream shops, markets and traditional New England restaurants in every down- town. I hope the next time you are looking for a family getaway, no matter what season, that you will consider the beautiful and magical Berkshires.
