It’s time for warm days and breezy nights, sleeveless sundresses and freezing cold air condi- tioning!!! Yes, we still need something to fend off the cold “indoors.” Summer shawls are the perfect solution. They are easily transportable and oh so versatile. A lacy shawl can double as a scarf, shrug, head covering, pareo (wrap skirt), poncho, etc. It is the perfect accessory when traveling or working in an office. Shawls are commonly rectangular, triangular or semi-circular and should easily cover your shoulders and midpoint of your back. The lighter the weight, the more versatile, and compactable. Think lace weight or fingering weight. Cashmere and linen are ele- gant choices. Wool blends used for socks are also great choices. Now is the perfect time to get a shawl project on the needles or hook. There are so many fun patterns available. Check out the free patterns on Ravelry.com, Knitty.com, and vogueknitting.com. If you find a scarf you love, just double or triple the width, add some length and turn it into a shawl…remember to double or triple the yarn requirements as well. Some personal favorites include: Crochet River Walk Wrap - By Sharon Falkner Apostrophe - by Rosemary (Romi) Hill Dragonfly Shawl - by Kristin Omdahl Knit Masgot - by Justyna Lorkowska QUADRI - by von Hinterm Stein Shibori Passion Flower Wrap - by Gina Wilde Phiaro Scarf by Katie Himmelberg (photo) So how to wear your new creation? Here are a few ideas beyond draping over your shoulders… - Day: Scarf – Bring the 2 short ends together. Place around neck and pass the 2 loose ends through the loop on the opposite side. Or, place the center of the shawl at necklace length, crisscross the loose ends behind your neck, bring to the front and tuck into the front loop to form a cowl - Day/Night: Dining out – Shrug – Drape shawl over shoulders. Bring the short ends under your arms and tie in the back. Now your hands are free, your shoulders are covered and your shawl is not dipping into the food. - Day: Beach/Sightseeing Cover-up – If you need to cover-up your legs, wrap the shawl around your waist. Make 2 bunny ears about 4” from where you would like them to join. Tie together in a square knot. Voila, a pareo. - Day/Night: Poncho – You will need a rectangular shawl and a ribbon or crocheted chain, the length of the shawl. Fold shawl in half bringing the 2 short ends togeth- er. Fold the ribbon is half. From the fold, working along one long side measure 9” down. Add the ribbon at this point and lace it (like lacing shoes) down toward the lower edge. Tie a bow. Put on your favorite white T-shirt and jeans and slip the pon- cho over your head. Wear the lacing down the back or on one shoulder. - Day/Night: Head scarf – Wrap around your head and tie in the back. Enjoy the convertible. Keep your shawl on-hand by tying to your purse handle. Happy Summer. See you in September! Carolyn Hanson is a local knitting and crochet designer, teacher and fiber artist. She can be contacted a t cchanson3@gmail.com.
