The wonderful news is that whether an independent or assisted living dwelling is chosen, maintenance, for the most part will be taken care of, and the thought of never having to mow the lawn or shovel a porch is a beautiful thing. Depending upon the facility, up to three meals, a washer/ dryer and dishwasher may be provid- ed, medicine assistance may be avail- able, as well as activities to create a very positive lifestyle. The trade off for this new found lack of responsibility frequently is less space for “things” than one’s previ- ous home allowed. So is that a bad thing? Not if good planning goes into the move. Here are some thoughts: • KITCHEN: bring service of 2-4 of dishes, glassware and flatware; 2 pots and pans; few nice pieces for entertaining, primarily to serve appetizers or desserts; 2-4 dish towels, as well as toaster, cof- feemaker, etc. if allowed. • BATHROOM: bring enough of what you will need but not much more, unless there is a storage area for toilet paper, absorbency pads, etc. Many facilities have a “store” where you can purchase items, or shuttle trips to area markets. Towel service for 2-4 is ideal, and this is a wonderful time to treat yourself to new towels in the colors of your new home. Throw out your old, or offer them to others. You will not need that much, so enjoy the beauty of fresh new ones! • WALL ART: there will, most likely, be less wall space, so be selective about what you choose to put on your walls. Pictures of family will be a priority, but with some cre- ativity, you can also add your flair to the design of your new home. • BEDDING: 2 sets of sheets is a good rule of thumb…one for the bed and another ready for use. Many bedrooms have room for a twin bed and one night stand, while others are large enough for a queen and two night stands. Be aware and use a tape measure and floor plan! Rooms look very different empty than they do when there is furniture in them. • LIVING ROOM: Again, bring fur- niture or purchase what fits in your new home. Stay focused on what is most important to you, whether that includes a standing recliner or sofa for guest seating. As always, staying in a color that works with all of your apartment is a beautiful way to make your new home look, well, like yours!
