WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU ARE EXPECTING PHYSICAL THERAPY By: Russell Altman, PT, DPT As a Physical Therapist, one of the most common questions I receive is “What should I expect from Physical Therapy?” This can be a very broad question and can be answered a lot of different ways depending on who you ask. Some people say no pain, no gain; some people will say all I got was a bunch of exercises and “the stimulation;” some people will say that they rarely saw the PT and primarily dealt with the aide. Here at ProActiveCare, the patient can always expect to receive top quality care from beginning to end. The patient should always expect hands on treatment from the Physical Therapist. After all, how do we expect to fix or cor- rect something without first determining what is wrong. The patient should expect a clear line of communication between themselves and the PT and walk away with a clear understanding of the treatment plan and PT diagnosis. The patient should expect that the Physical Thera- pist be open to questions and dialogue so that they can “own” the rehabilitation process, mean- ing that they are the drivers on the road to recovery. The patient should expect the Physical Ther- apist to keep their goals in mind when creating a treatment plan, not just to correct whatever impairments are found during the evaluation. The patient should expect one on one inter- action so that they are closely observed and monitored while performing exercise for their recovery, which greatly reduces the incidence of reinjuring them- selves during the treatment. The patient should expect the physi- cal therapist to treat their injuries as unique and be cre- ative with the treatment plan; putting their injuries into a pro- tocol does not work for every- one as everyone is “unique” to begin with. The patient should expect the physical therapy ses- sions to run based on their needs, not the needs of the Physical Therapist. The patient should expect that the sessions should be fun, while challenging the patient to help reach prede- termined goals. ProActiveCare utilizes and values “one on one” care to deliver the needs of the patients in the best manner possible. Russell Altman, PT, DPT will strive to meet every expectation a patient will have in order to deliver top notch recovery experiences so patients can return to their best quality of life!
