We never want to think about,
let alone plan for sad times, but
speaking from personal experi-
ence, planning made my families’
very sad day just a little lighter.
Years back, long before I became
employed in the cemetery busi-
ness, my Dad died suddenly five
days before Christmas. We were
all in shock and having small chil-
dren in the family it was difficult to
handle all the arrangements and
still have a holiday for the kids.
The funeral arrangements were
not planned, and going to the
funeral home was certainly eye
opening. The list of things to do
seemed long and time consuming
when all we wanted to do was go
home and be together. A casket
had to be chosen, what type of
service did we want, flowers had
to be ordered, calls needed to be
made, the list went on and on.
The one thing we didn’t need to
talk about was the cemetery
property as my parents had pur-
chased graves a few years earlier.
I still don’t know why they never
went any further with their
arrangements.
Just the fact that they had
already purchased the cemetery
property took a huge burden off
the family. Looking back, going to
a cemetery to look at graves, with
snow on the ground was not
something any of us wanted to
do and we were relieved this was
taken care of. It’s such a simple
thing to do ahead of time. My
parents got to choose the ceme-
tery, the location and pay for the
property over time.
It would have been better if all
the arrangements had been made
but who knew my Dad was going
to leave us so suddenly. Could this
happen to your family? We didn’t
think so.
